The checkout used to offer a place to type a discount code whether or not any code existed. That sends people off mid-purchase to search for a code that was never out there.
The field now appears only when there is a live offer, or when you have arrived with a code already — including one that turned out not to work, so there is still somewhere to tell you why.
If you have a code, nothing changes: it still applies exactly as before.
