Improved Screen Recorder

A better page for a shared recording

The page at a recording's share link was a box inside a box inside a box, with a full-width Download button as the biggest thing on it. It is now built around the recording itself, and a still frame from the recording is used as the page's opening image and as the thumbnail when the link is pasted into a chat app.

A recording's share link is often the first thing someone sees of your work, so the page it opens should look like it was made on purpose.

The page no longer stacks cards inside a container: it is the Magpie wordmark, the recording, a caption line under it with the title, who recorded it, the date and the length, and a quiet credit at the bottom. A portrait recording puts its caption beside it on a wide screen instead of leaving empty space either side, so the page reads as designed on a desktop rather than a phone layout stretched wide.

The full-width Download button is gone. Share and Edit appear for you only, next to Download in one row - and Share now covers what the separate share box used to do, opening your phone's share sheet or a dialog with the link, copy button and post links. Someone you send the link to sees the recording and Download, and nothing else: they already have the link, so the page does not ask them to pass it on.

Every recording now also has a still frame taken from it when it was saved. It is what the page shows before you press play, and it is what a chat app, Slack or a social post shows as the thumbnail when the link is pasted - so the link arrives as a picture of the recording rather than a generic card. Existing recordings get theirs when the site's administrator runs the backfill.
