New Websites

Host a website from your own files

Upload the HTML, CSS, JavaScript and other files of a website you already have. It is online at a Magpie address at once, every change is a version you can restore, and your own domain can point at it.

Websites now has two kinds of website. Alongside websites built in the editor, Upload your own files in New website makes a website from files you already have: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images and anything else, served exactly as they are.

Drop a folder, files or a ZIP on the website's page. Before anything is sent, the page lists what will be uploaded, which files replace one already there, and which cannot be uploaded and why. When the last file arrives, the files are live together at the website's Magpie address, where you check the site before pointing your own domain at it.

Every change is a version: an upload, a rename, a move, a delete. The Versions band lists the last 50 with who made each and what changed, and Restore brings any of them back. Download ZIP gives a version's files.

Files are served on the website's own address, never on Magpie's, so a site's scripts cannot reach your Magpie account. Programs and server-side code cannot be uploaded; the page says what to upload instead. Each file counts toward the storage of the person who uploaded it.

Websites built from a Git repository are files websites too: Switch where files come from chooses between uploads and a repository, and a repository without a content/ folder is now copied as it is.
