Set up your school
Your school is the public home of your courses: set its name, address, logo, colour, fonts, support address, catalogue, domain and new course defaults.
A school is the public home of the courses in Personal or a team: its catalogue,
each course's page, sign-in and lessons are at its address,
/learn/{address}. Each Personal or team has one school. Its settings are in
Courses › Settings. Team admins change the School, New courses and
Certificates bands; every member changes Your notifications.
The school opens when the first course is published. Until then the settings show what it will be, and changing one makes the school ahead of time.
The school's name and address
Name is shown on every page of the school and is the sender's name on course emails, as "{school} via Magpie". It starts as the team's name, or your name in Personal. It cannot be Magpie's own name.
Address is the part after /learn/, made of lower-case letters, numbers and
hyphens. Publishing the first course asks for it. It cannot change after a
course has been published, so links to the school and its courses keep
working. Until then you can change it in Settings. Each course's address follows
the school's: /learn/{school}/{course}.
Logo, colour and fonts
- Logo: a PNG, JPEG or WebP picture from Your images, shown above the school's name on its pages, its sign-in page and its certificates. Remove logo shows the name alone; the picture stays in Your images.
- Brand Kit: takes the kit's first colour and its first two fonts that load on the web. Changing the kit later does not change the school until you choose the kit again. See Keep brand assets in the Brand section.
- Colour: a colour written like
#1F6FEB, which tints the school's pages and buttons. Without one, the school uses blue. - Heading font and Body font: chosen from the list, or Magpie's default.
Support address
Support address is where students' replies to course emails go. Without one, replies go to the team owner's address.
Catalogue
With Catalogue on, the school's address lists every published course that is listed. With it off, the address shows the school's name and a sign-in for students, and each course is reached by its own address. A course is Listed or Unlisted in its More › Edit details….
View your school opens the school's address once it is open.
Show the school at your own domain
Custom domain shows the school's catalogue and course pages at a domain you
own, such as learn.example.com. Lessons, sign-in, enrolling and buying stay at
the school's Magpie address, so a student signs in once for every school on
Magpie. The steps and the DNS records are the same as for a Store; see
Show your Store at your own domain. You can connect a domain before the school opens; it
shows the school once the first course is published.
New courses
The New courses band sets what a new course starts with. Each course can change these in its own Settings, and changing them here does not change existing courses.
- Time zone: the zone lesson dates and live sessions are set in. Students see times in their own zone.
- Complete video lessons when watched: a lesson completes itself when its video or audio has been watched to 90%.
- Lessons in order: each required lesson opens when the one before it is complete. A submitted assignment counts as complete for this.
- Comments wait for approval: new comments and posts by students are shown once a member who can edit the course approves them in To review.
- Email students when lessons open: one email on each day lessons open for a student, at 9:00 am in their time zone.
- Remind inactive students: Off, or one reminder after 7, 14 or 30 days without opening the course, naming their next lesson.
- Welcome message, Completion message and Inactivity reminder message: the text that starts each of those emails.
The Certificates band sets the certificate every course of the school uses; see Give certificates for a course.
Your notifications
Your notifications are your own emails about the courses in Personal or the team where you are an instructor or teaching assistant:
- Comments and posts: new comments and posts by students, and comments they report. Once a day by default.
- Submissions and applications: assignments submitted for review, and applications to join a course. As they arrive by default.
Each can be As they arrive, Once a day, at 8:00 am in your time zone, or Off. The daily email also counts new students.
If the school's address does not open after a course is published, Contact support.
