Set up and publish a Store
Set up one Store for Personal or a team by name, finish what the overview asks for, preview it, and publish the storefront.
One Store belongs to Personal or a team. A team admin opens Store, chooses
Set up Store and gives it a name. Its address is made from the name, such
as /shop/north-star-pottery, and its prices are in the team's currency. Both
can be changed in Store settings until the Store is first published.
What the overview asks for
Until the Store can be published, the overview lists what is missing, each with a link to the page that fixes it:
- Add a contact email: the address customers use for Store questions.
- Make a product live: at least one live product with an image and a price that is available and in stock.
- Add a shipping method: needed when a live product is shipped.
- Set up payments: checkout stays off until the Stripe account on Payments is ready.
Publish and unpublish
Publish is beside the Store's name on the overview once the contact email, a live product and shipping are in place. The first time, Magpie asks you to confirm, because the address and currency cannot be changed after the Store is published. A Store can be published before payments are ready: buyers can open it but cannot check out until they are.
Unpublish takes the Store offline: buyers cannot open it or check out until you publish it again, and its products, orders and settings are kept.
If Stripe later restricts the payment account, the storefront stays open while checkout is off.
Preview before publishing
Team members who can open Store can look around a Store that is not published while signed in: View store on the Store overview opens it with a note that it is a preview. They can browse but cannot add to the cart or check out. A Store on its own domain does not show the preview.
To let other people look before it is published, set a Preview password
in Store settings and share it with the address /shop/{your store}/password.
Anyone who enters it can browse the Store in that browser until it closes, but
cannot add to the cart or check out. Changing the password stops earlier
previews; leaving it empty turns previews off. Too many wrong passwords from one
connection make it wait before trying again.
Store settings
Open Settings in the Store menu. Its rows save as you change them, or open a page of their own:
- Storefront: name, address, custom domain (see Show your Store at your own domain), Website (where your Store is shown; see Show your Store in your website), description, contact email and preview password.
- Product feeds: addresses for Google and Meta (see Product feeds for Google and Meta).
- Design: design, logo, cover image, accent colour, fonts, announcement, and menu (see Store design, colours, fonts and menu).
- Payments and shipping: currency, and the Shipping origin country Checkout starts with, chosen from the countries your shipping zones include.
- Orders: new-order email and phone notifications, payment methods, asking for a phone number, quote and wholesale requests, the weekly summary email, low-stock alerts and stock locations.
- Checkout: terms, Newsletter sign-up and reminders (see Terms, Newsletter sign-up and reminders at checkout).
- Reviews: review requests and publishing (see Product reviews).
- Tax: Stripe Tax (see Charge tax on Store orders with Stripe Tax).
- Team: Who can work in Store (see Who can work in Store) and webhooks.
- Policies: shipping policy, online returns (see Returns) and returns policy. The policies and the contact email are shown below the product list on the Store's home and collection pages.
Language
The words Magpie adds to your Store, and the emails buyers get, are in your team's Language for customers: English, French, Spanish or German. It is set on the team page, or for Personal in Settings, and also applies to the other pages your team publishes. See Language for customers.
Payments
Store uses the Stripe account on Payments and takes card payments as one-time charges in that account. Magpie takes no fee on Store sales; Stripe's processing fee applies. The Stripe account is the seller and is responsible for tax, refunds, disputes, shipping and customer support.
In the Magpie app
Team admins can review and edit the Store's name, description, contact email, shipping origin and policies in the Magpie app. Before the Store is published, the address and currency can be changed there too. Admins can also review and add shipping zones and see whether payments are ready. Publish Store is on the Store screen while the Store is a draft, and Unpublish Store is in its menu. Starting or continuing payment setup opens Stripe's own pages; identity and payout details do not pass through Magpie.
If an item on the overview stays listed after you have done it, Contact support.
