An assignment is a lesson of the kind Assignment. On the course's Outline, select Add lesson to under a module, enter a title and choose Assignment. The lesson's text is the brief students read. The settings are in the Assignment band of its editor.

Assignment settings

  • Students submit: Text, Files, or Text and files. A submission can have up to 10 files of up to 100 MB each.
  • Review by an instructor (on by default): each submission waits in To review until it is approved or changes are asked. With it off, the lesson is complete when the student submits.
  • Hold the next lesson until approved: shown when review is on and the course has Lessons in order on. With this off, a submission waiting for review lets the next lesson open; with it on, the next lesson stays closed until the submission is approved (see When course lessons open, and how long students keep access).
  • Due: a number of days after the assignment opens for each student, up to 365 days. In a course taught in cohorts it is Due on day, a day of the cohort, and the assignment is due at the end of that day in the cohort's time zone.

Students see the due date. A submission sent after it is accepted and marked late. Students who have not submitted will be emailed 24 hours before it is due.

Once there are submissions, a Submissions row shows how many are waiting and approved, and opens To review with only this assignment's submissions.

What students do

A student writes their answer and adds files on the lesson's page. Their text is saved as they type, and they select Submit assignment when it is ready. They can change a submission until an instructor opens it in To review. After that, they can change it only if you ask for changes, with Submit new version. After Reset progress on the student's page, an approved assignment is not complete for them any more: they submit it again as a new version, which starts with the text of the approved one.

Submission files count toward the storage of the student who uploads them, not your team's. Only the student and members who can edit the course can download them.

Reviewing a submission

To review is in the Courses section of the sidebar. Its Submissions tab lists the submissions waiting in the courses of the team that you can edit, oldest first, with late ones marked as late. Choose a course to see only its submissions.

Opening a submission marks it as in review, and the student can no longer change it. The page shows the submission, its files to download, and any earlier versions with the feedback each one got. Write your Feedback, then select:

  • Approve: the lesson is complete for the student.
  • Ask for changes: feedback is required. The student will write a new version, which starts with the text of the last one. Files are not copied; the earlier version keeps them.

The student will be emailed your decision and feedback either way. If another instructor reviewed the same submission first, the page shows their decision and keeps the feedback you wrote.

Submissions and course progress

A submission waiting for review lets the next lesson open under Lessons in order, unless Hold the next lesson until approved is on. It does not count toward completing the course until it is approved.

If a submission does not appear in To review, Contact support.
