A course's Students tab lists everyone with an enrolment in the course, newest first, with their cohort, how they joined, their progress, when they were last active and their access. Tabs narrow the list by state; search by name or email address, and filter by cohort, by how they joined and by progress. Export CSV downloads the list as it is filtered. The students pages and the report are for members who can edit the course.

Add students

  1. In the course's Students, choose Add students.
  2. Type or paste one person a line, such as Ana Lee, ana@example.com or Ana Lee <ana@example.com>; an address alone works too. Or choose a CSV or TSV file with name and email columns.
  3. In a course taught in cohorts, choose the cohort.
  4. Optionally choose the date Access ends. Left empty, the course's access length applies (When course lessons open, and how long students keep access).
  5. To add them without an email, untick Email each person a link to the course. Choose Add students.

Anyone without a Magpie account gets one, made from their address, with nothing to fill in. A long list is added in steps, with how far it has got under the button and Stop adding to stop. A line that was not added, such as an address that is not valid, is listed above the box with its reason, and only those lines are left in the box to correct and add again.

Add students is offered once the course has been published and while it is not archived. On the free plan, your team's courses can have up to 50 students with access; people beyond that are not added, and the drawer says how many (Get started with Courses).

Students also join from the course page, by enrolling, applying or buying (Sell a course). Before anyone has joined, the empty list shows the course page's address to copy.

Applications

When How students join is Free, approved by you or Paid, approved by you, people apply on the course page and answer your questions. The course's Outline shows Waiting for approval with how many applied; Review applications opens To review at its Applications tab, where each one is approved or declined with their answers beside them. A student's own page has Approve and Decline too.

An approved applicant of a free course gets access. An approved applicant of a paid course is emailed a personal link to buy it at the price they applied for; when the course has several prices, To review names the one each person chose. A declined applicant will be emailed that the application was not accepted, without a reason.

A student's page

Select a student's name to open their page. It shows their progress, cohort, access end, when they joined, when they were last active, their certificate and time zone, then a band for each part of their time in the course: every way they have had access, each lesson, quiz attempts, submissions, live sessions, the emails sent to them, an application's answers, and their activity, newest first.

  • Cohort and Access until change where they are shown. Moving a student to another cohort keeps their progress; their lessons open by the new cohort's dates.
  • Mark as complete or Mark as not complete on a lesson's row changes that lesson for the student.
  • Give access… gives a student whose access ended, or whose application was declined, access again, with no end or until a date.
  • More holds Send a sign-in link, Reset progress, Open contact, End access and, for a team admin, Remove and erase.

Reset progress asks first, then makes every lesson not complete for the student, so they can complete the course again. They take its quizzes again: only attempts made after the reset count toward a quiz's attempts, and extra attempts you allowed before it end. An assignment that was approved is submitted again as a new version, starting from its text, and is reviewed as usual. Their earlier quiz attempts and submissions stay in the report.

End access asks first, then ends every way the student has access to the course at once. Their progress is kept, and comes back if you give access again. Ending access does not refund an order; refunds are made in Store.

Change several students at once

Tick students in the list, or tick every student on the page and choose to select every student the list matches. The bar above the list then offers:

  • Email students…: a subject and a message, sent at once from your school via Magpie to the chosen students who have access. Students who turned off emails from your school are skipped.
  • Move to cohort…, in a course taught in cohorts.
  • Change access end…: no end, or a last day of access. Every way each student has access now ends then, earlier or later than before. Students whose access was ended, or who were never given the course, are left as they are.
  • End access, which asks first.

A move and a new access end happen at once, and the page offers Undo. Students a change could not reach stay ticked, with the reason.

Every student in your school

Students in Courses' navigation lists each person once, however many of your team's courses they take, with the courses they are in and when they were last active. Search by name or address, or narrow the list to one course; Export CSV follows the search. A person's page lists their courses, each opening their page in that course, with Send a sign-in link, Open contact and, for a team admin, Remove and erase.

Remove and erase

Remove and erase, for a team admin, asks first, then ends their access to every course in your school, revokes their certificates, and deletes their submissions' files, comments and notes. Counts and scores are kept, shown as Deleted user. Their Store orders keep their name and email address, and a payment plan keeps running until you cancel it in Store. Their Magpie account is not changed. This cannot be undone.

The report

A course's Report tab answers the same questions in the same order, each band with its own Export CSV:

  • Enrolments: how many students, how many were active lately, how many completed, the average progress, and enrolments by week with how each joined. The CSV has every week.
  • Lessons: how many students opened and completed each published lesson, and how much of its video they watched on average.
  • Where students stop watching: of the students who started each video, the share still watching at each tenth of it. Recordings of live sessions are not counted.
  • Quizzes: how many passed of those who took each quiz, their average best score and their attempts, with each quiz's questions; Export questions as CSV has every question.
  • Assignments: how many students sent each assignment, and where the latest version each sent stands.
  • Sales: for a course sold through Store, to Store managers who can see Store's reports.

A band with nothing to count, such as videos in a course that has none, is left out. Before anyone has enrolled, the report says so.
