QR Codes
Make a QR code for a website, a Wi-Fi network, a contact card, an event or one of your published pages.
QR Codes puts what you enter into a code and shows the preview as you work. Change its colours, size and clear space, add a logo from your image library, then download it as SVG, PNG or PDF, print it, or save it in Personal or a team. The same area reads codes from a camera or an image.
Get started freeWhat a code can hold
Kind of code chooses what the code holds, and the fields for it appear below. Under Website or text, an address that begins with http:// or https:// becomes a website code, and anything else is stored as text.
- Website
- An address beginning with http:// or https://. A website code can be static, holding the address itself, or dynamic, holding a Magpie address whose destination can be changed after printing.
- Plain text
- Any text, such as a serial number or a short message.
- Wi-Fi
- A network name, its security (WPA / WPA2 / WPA3, WEP or No password), its password and whether it is a hidden network, in the format phone cameras read to join a network.
- Contact card
- A vCard with a name or organization, job title, phone, mobile, email, website, address and notes.
- Email, phone and SMS
- An email address with an optional subject and message, a number to call, or a number and a message to send as a text.
- Calendar event
- An event title, its start and end or All day, a location and a description.
- A page in Magpie
- A list of the team's published pages to choose from: Forms, websites, the Link-In-Bio List, the Store, presentations shared by link and the Newsletter. The code holds the page's public address.
Colours, logo, size and error correction
Design and export options change how the code looks. The preview changes with each choice.
- Foreground and Background
- Any two colours. A warning appears when the two have too little contrast to scan reliably.
- Logo
- An image from Your images, chosen in the same image picker used across Magpie, placed in the centre of the code. A saved code keeps its logo.
- Error correction
- How much of the code can be covered or damaged and still be read: Low, Standard, High or Highest. Choosing a logo sets it to Highest until the logo is removed.
- Export size and Clear space
- Export size sets the pixel size of the downloaded image. Clear space is the blank border around the code, which scanners need to find it.
A check before downloading
In browsers with a built-in QR decoder, QR Codes reads the finished preview and shows a warning when it cannot read it. The warnings do not stop a static code from being downloaded or printed. Test the printed code with more than one phone before it is used: content that is too long for a code shows an error instead of a preview, and a shorter text or a lower error correction level makes the code less dense.
Download, print and save
A static code can be downloaded or printed without saving it. A dynamic code is saved first, because saving creates its permanent Magpie address.
- Download SVG
- A vector file that scales to any size without blurring, for print.
- Download PNG
- An image at the export size, for documents, slides and websites.
- A page with the code's name, the code and its content in readable text beneath it.
- Save QR code
- Keeps the code, with its design, on the Saved codes page, to download again later. A name is optional; without one, the code's content is used.
Saved codes in Personal or a team
Saved codes belong to Personal or the selected team, and the team's members see the team's codes. Members with view access cannot save, change or delete a code. A saved Wi-Fi code stores the network password, and anyone who can open the code can read it.
The assistant on the Dashboard can search saved codes, create a website or text code, and change, turn off or delete a saved code.
Store product pages and the Link-In-Bio List each have a QR code of their own address to download as well.
Scan a code
Scan a code reads a QR code with the browser's built-in QR decoder and shows its content first. Nothing opens or connects until you choose it, and the decoded content is treated as untrusted text.
- From a camera or an image
- Use camera, Upload image (PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF), Choose from Your images, drop an image, or Paste image where the browser allows it. An uploaded image is read in the browser and is not added to Your images.
- Websites
- The full address and its hostname are shown, with Open link.
- Contact cards and events
- A contact card shows its name, phone and email and downloads as a vCard. An event shows its title, times and location and downloads as an .ics file for a calendar.
- Wi-Fi
- The network details are shown and nothing is connected.
