Image Converter

Crop, resize and convert one image, and make several files from it in one pass.

Image Converter opens a picture from your image library or your device. Frame it by eye or by exact pixels, then set the size, format and quality, or a maximum file size. The original is not changed: download the result or save it to your image library as a new image.

Open an image

The picture opens for editing, and nothing is produced until you download or save a result.

From Your images
Choose from Magpie picks an image already in your image library, and Edit on an image in Your images opens it in Image Converter.
From your device
Upload image, or drop a file anywhere on the page. The file is converted without being added to your library first.
File types
JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP and AVIF. HEIC and HEIF photos, such as those taken on an iPhone, are converted to JPEG when they are uploaded, and Image Converter works from that JPEG.
Largest image
An image's longer edge can be up to 8,000 pixels. A larger HEIC photo is scaled down to that size; any other larger image is refused.

Crop, rotate and flip

Drag the crop frame's corners to resize it, or drag inside it to move it, with a mouse, a finger or a pen. The X, Y, W and H fields hold the same rectangle in pixels, so an exact crop can also be typed.

Crop ratios
Original, Free, Square 1:1, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, 9:16 and 4:5, or a Custom ratio such as 5:7. Reset crop puts the frame back around the whole picture.
Rotate and flip
Rotate left or right, and flip horizontally or vertically. The crop turns and mirrors with the picture, so it frames the same part of it.
Photos from a phone's camera
The orientation a camera stores with a photo is applied when the photo opens, so it appears the right way up without being rotated by hand.

Output size

Size starts at Original size, where the crop comes out at its own pixels. Custom size takes a Width and Height in pixels, and Lock ratio, on by default, keeps them in proportion. A preset sets both: Square, Portrait, Story / Vertical, HD, 4K, Web Large, Web Medium, Thumbnail or Avatar. A preset with a shape sets the crop ratio to match, so the crop and the file are the same shape.

Crop to fill
When the size you asked for is a different shape from the crop, the file fills the exact dimensions and the extra picture is cut off.
Fit inside, add a background
The whole picture stays visible inside the exact dimensions, and a background colour you choose fills the rest.
Resize proportionally
The picture is scaled without being forced to an exact width and height.
Enlarging
A size larger than the source gives those dimensions, but enlarging cannot add detail the original does not have.

Formats and quality

Quality offers Maximum, High, Medium and Small file, each translated to the matching setting of the chosen format. Camera and location information (EXIF) is removed from every image Single image produces.

JPEG
For photographs, with small files. JPEG has no transparency, so a transparent area is filled with a solid background colour.
PNG
For screenshots, graphics and transparency. PNG is lossless and has no quality setting: a PNG gets smaller only with smaller dimensions.
WebP
Small files with transparency, for websites.
AVIF
Very small files at good quality, for places that do not need to open in older software or email programs.

A maximum file size

Set a maximum file size takes a limit in KB or MB, such as the largest upload a form or a website accepts. Image Converter tries a sequence of quality settings and keeps the best result at or under the limit.

If lowering the quality is not enough decides what happens next: Reduce the dimensions too makes the image smaller as well, and Keep the dimensions never changes them. When the limit cannot be reached at a usable quality, Image Converter says so instead of producing a degraded image.

Several files from one image

Add another size or format makes several files from the same picture in one pass, such as a website banner, a square crop and a thumbnail.

  1. Add each file

Each appears in Files to produce under its filename.

  2. Set each one

Click a file in the list to edit its own crop, size, format and quality. Rotate and flip correct the source picture, so they apply to every file.

  3. Download or save them together

Download becomes Download all (zip), and Save copy to Magpie becomes Save all to Magpie. A file that cannot be produced shows the reason on its own row, and the others are still produced.

Download, save and Converted images

Download saves the result to your device. Save copy to Magpie adds it to Your images as a new image, available in every image picker in Magpie, and the original stays as it was.

Converted images lists everything you have converted, newest first, to download again or save to Magpie. A result that is not saved to Magpie can be downloaded for 48 hours, then its file is removed. A saved copy counts toward your plan's storage: 1 GB on the free plan and 20 GB on paid plans.

Conversions belong to your account, not to a team, and so does Your images.
