Quizzes in a course
Write a quiz's questions, set its pass mark, attempts, shuffle, time limit and what students see after submitting, and allow a student another attempt.
A quiz is a lesson of the kind Quiz. On the course's Outline, select Add lesson to under a module, enter a title and choose Quiz. The quiz's editor has the lesson's text above the questions, a Questions band and a Quiz settings band. A quiz needs at least one question before it can be published.
Questions
Select Add question and choose its Kind:
- One answer: 2 to 10 options, with one ticked as right.
- Several answers: 2 to 10 options, with every right one ticked. The question earns its points only when the student chooses every right option and no wrong one.
- True or false: choose which is the right answer.
- Short answer: the student types an answer. Under Accepted answers, enter each answer that counts as right, one per line. Capitals and extra spaces do not count when an answer is marked.
Each question has its text in Markdown, an optional picture from your images, an optional Explanation, and Points (1 by default, up to 100). A quiz can have up to 200 questions. Select a question to change or delete it, and use Up and Down or drag to reorder them.
Import questions… replaces every question in the quiz with questions written as JSON, for example by an assistant (see Replace a quiz's questions by pasting JSON).
Quiz settings
- Pass mark: the score, as a percentage, a student needs to pass. With none, the quiz is complete when it is submitted.
- Attempts: Unlimited, or 1 to 20.
- Shuffle: each attempt shows the questions, and the options of each question, in a new order.
- After submitting, students see: their score; their score and which answers were right; or their score, the right answers and the explanations.
- Time limit: up to 600 minutes for each attempt. Students select Start quiz to begin, and an attempt that is still open when time runs out will be submitted as it stands.
Students do not see right answers or explanations before they submit, and afterwards they see only what After submitting, students see allows.
Taking a quiz and scoring
A student's answers are saved as they choose them, so an attempt can be finished later. Submit quiz asks first only when questions have no answer. An attempt left open for 24 hours will be submitted as it stands.
The score is the points earned divided by the points available, rounded down to a whole percentage, so 79.9% does not pass a pass mark of 80%. A student's best attempt is the one that counts. Once a student passes, the lesson stays complete, even if a later attempt does not pass.
In Preview as student you can answer the quiz, and nothing is saved.
Changing a quiz students have taken
Each attempt keeps a copy of the questions as they were when it started. Changes to the questions, the pass mark and the time limit will apply to attempts started afterwards; earlier scores do not change. The Questions band says how many students have taken the quiz. A change to After submitting, students see applies to every result, including earlier ones.
Another attempt for one student
When a student has used every attempt, the quiz tells them to ask you for another. On the student's page, the Quiz attempts band shows each attempt with their answers; select Allow another attempt to give them one more (see Course students and reports).
After Reset progress on the student's page, the student takes the quiz again with its full number of attempts. The band still lists the earlier attempts, marked as before the reset, and counts only the attempts since.
