Storefront, cart, checkout, and customer orders
How buyers browse a Store, fill a cart, use codes and gift cards, choose shipping, pay on Stripe's page, and find their orders and downloads afterwards.
Browse the Store
A public Store lists active products and collections. Search and sort the catalog, and use Filters to narrow it by price, option (such as size), type, brand, tag, or In stock only. Sold-out products are listed and marked.
Shoppers see Recently viewed on the Store home and product pages: up to 8 of the products they opened most recently in that Store. The list is kept only in their own browser and is not sent to Magpie or to the Store.
When one of your websites shows your Store (see Show your Store in your website), shoppers browse its Shop page, product pages and Cart in the website's look, with a Cart link in the website's header. Checkout and the confirmation are a plain page in the website's colours, with Back to cart. Paying works as described below.
Add to the cart
Open a product, choose an available variant and quantity, and add it to the cart. A product can limit how many one order or one customer can buy. Each cart belongs to one Store; items from different Stores cannot share a checkout.
Some products ask for more before they go in the cart:
- Your price: the product is pay what you want. Enter the suggested amount or any amount at or above the minimum shown.
- Personalisation, such as an engraving: fill in or choose what the product asks for. A field may add to the price, shown beside its name. The cart shows what you entered; to change it, remove the item and add it again.
- An item that is out of stock but can still be ordered says so, with the date it is expected to ship when the Store gave one. You pay when you order.
- A gift card asks for an amount and who it is for: someone else, by email, with an optional name, message and date to send it, or you, at the email address used at checkout.
The cart lists products the Store chose to go with the ones in it. When every place the Store ships to has free shipping from the same order subtotal, the cart says how much more is needed for it, or that the order has reached it.
When the Store takes quote requests, Request a quote sends the cart to the Store instead of paying (see Quote requests from the cart). A business with wholesale prices sees them while signed in (see Wholesale customers, price lists and pay by invoice).
Discount codes and gift cards
Enter a discount code under the cart summary and select Apply. The cart shows each discount and the total after it; when a code cannot be used, it says why. Automatic discounts the Store offers apply without a code.
When the Store has gift cards, enter a gift card code under Gift card in
the cart. The card pays after discounts, for items and shipping but not for
other gift cards, and the cart and checkout show what is left to pay. The rest
is paid on Stripe's page. When the card pays for everything, there is no Stripe
page: enter the shipping address at checkout and select Place order. Check a
card's balance on the Store's gift card page (/shop/your-store/gift-card). See
Store gift cards and store credit.
Shipping, pickup and delivery
For physical goods, choose the destination country and an eligible shipping method at checkout. When the Store's shipping depends on the state, province or postal code, Checkout asks for them before it lists methods; enter the same address on Stripe's page. A method can show when the order is expected, such as "Arrives in 3–5 business days", counted in business days from the order; the order page and confirmation email show the expected dates until the order ships.
A pickup method shows where to collect the order, and Stripe's page does not ask for an address. When the Store marks the order ready, you will be emailed the pickup address, times and any instructions, and your order page shows them.
A local delivery method delivers only to some postal codes. Choose it, enter the postal code of the delivery address and, when the Store offers dates, choose a delivery date. A postal code the Store does not deliver to is refused before payment; choose another method. Enter the same address on Stripe's page. The delivery date is shown on the order page and in the confirmation email.
Pay
Prices, stock, shipping, currency and totals are checked again before Stripe Checkout opens. The shipping address and payment details are entered on Stripe's page, not in Magpie, and so is a phone number when the Store asks for one. A buyer signed in to Magpie can choose an address saved from an earlier order in the same Store, and Stripe's page is filled in with it.
A Store can ask for more on the Checkout page. A required box asks you to agree to the Store's terms, linked to the page. An unticked box asks whether the Store may email you news and offers: ticking it adds you to the Store's Newsletter when you pay, and, when the Store sends them, gets you one reminder email if the checkout expires before you pay. The reminder's link puts the items back in your cart, with any discount code it offers.
Payment methods in Store settings chooses what Stripe's page offers. Cards and wallets is the default. Payment methods turned on in Stripe offers the methods turned on in the seller's Stripe dashboard, such as bank debits. A payment that settles later leaves the order Processing: its items stay reserved until the payment succeeds, when the order is paid and confirmed by email, or fails, when the items are released and the buyer's cart is restored.
The return page shows the current payment state. Coming back from Stripe's page is not proof of payment; the order is confirmed once Stripe confirms the payment.
Your order afterwards
Guests receive a private order link by email. The link itself grants access, so do not forward it. The order page shows the items, totals, shipping or pickup details, tracking once the Store adds it, any returns, and Return items while the Store's online return period is open (see Returns).
A signed-in buyer can choose Add to your orders on the order page to keep a guest order in their account; matching an email address alone does not add it. Your orders lists every order the account bought, and Your downloads lists every file and licence key from them. Paid digital products give private downloads, and any licence keys, on the order page, for the period and number of downloads it states (see Sell digital products, files and licence keys).
The Magpie app does not show orders you bought or their downloads.
If payment succeeded in Stripe but the order remains pending after reloading, or a current private link is refused, Contact support.
