Podcast

Record an episode in a browser, alone or with guests who join from an invite link.

Solo records your microphone in takes and publishes them as one MP3. With other people opens a recording session: everyone talks live, while each person's microphone is recorded on their own device and uploaded as a separate track.

Solo recording

Solo records one microphone in a browser. Each take is saved to an episode draft when it ends.

  1. Takes

Record starts a take and pausing closes it, so you can stop and start again without losing what came before. Play a take back, scrub through it, or remove it.

  2. Drafts

Save & Finish Later keeps the draft, listed on the podcast's page with Continue.

  3. Publish Episode

Once the episode has a title, Publish Episode will join the takes in order into one MP3, publish it, and delete the separate takes.

Recording with guests

With other people creates a named recording session, linked to an episode draft if you choose one. Send each guest the session's invite link; a note beside it says how many people a session holds.

  1. Joining

A guest opens the link in a browser, enters the name the others will see, and joins without a Magpie account. Opening the link again in the same browser returns them to their place instead of adding them twice.

  2. Getting ready

Everyone can talk to each other from the moment they join. Each person chooses a microphone, records a short private test, then chooses I'm ready to record.

  3. Host and co-hosts

The host uses Start recording, Pause, Resume and Stop take, and can make someone a co-host with the same controls, hand host control to a co-host, replace the invite link or remove someone.

  4. More takes

Pause keeps the same take, and Stop take ends it. Record another take starts the next one in the same room with the same invite link, and earlier takes are kept.

How each voice is recorded and uploaded

During a take, each person's browser records only their own microphone, in short pieces it saves on the device before uploading them, and it retries an upload that fails. The live conversation is separate, so a weak call connection does not by itself stop anyone's recording.

Audio received
While a take records, the deck lists everyone with how much of their audio Magpie has received, and names anyone whose audio has stopped arriving.
A page that closes
The person reopens the invite link in the same browser and chooses Continue as their name. Recording continues in their track, saved audio uploads, and the time away is kept as silence so the track stays in step.
An upload that cannot finish
After a take, Uploads shows how much of each person's audio has arrived. A few minutes later, the owner can choose Use received audio to finish the take with what arrived.
Phones and tablets
In a mobile browser, keep the recording page open and unlocked.

Listen and adjust

When a take is finished, Magpie's servers build each person's audio into a WAV track and line the tracks up on one timeline. Listen and adjust plays them as a combined MP3 and has controls for each track. Adjustments are saved apart from the recordings, can be undone or reset, and apply to new combined exports; the original tracks are not changed.

Timing
Move earlier and Move later shift a voice that is behind or ahead. Offset moves a whole track, drift corrects voices that start together and separate later, and two matching moments set both.
Volume, mute and solo
Listen to one track alone, mute one or change its volume, then save the settings for the next combined export.
Trim
Cut unwanted silence from the beginning or end of a track.

From a recording to an episode

Use as episode adds the combined MP3 to the session's episode draft as a take, after any takes already in it, or makes a new draft named after the session. The draft opens in the Recorder, where you can record solo takes after it, enter the title and description, and publish.

Publishing will add the episode to the podcast's public page and RSS feed when the podcast is on. Recording is on every plan; the episode counts toward your plan's episode limit and your file storage.

Downloads and the Recordings list

Downloads from a session are private to the podcast's owner. An MP3 edited outside Magpie can be uploaded to the podcast as an episode.

Download all tracks (ZIP)
Every person's aligned WAV and a session-markers.csv, for editing outside Magpie.
Single files
Each person's original WAV and aligned WAV, the combined MP3, and a combined WAV for a lossless mix.
Recordings
Sessions are listed under Recordings on the podcast's page, with each take's date and length, and opening one returns to its room and review. Delete recording deletes its takes, uploads and exports.
