Everyone in a campaign is one of your contacts, sent to at the contact's email address. People on the campaign's page lists them.

Add people

Add people in the page bar offers three ways:

  • Everyone with a tag… adds each contact with the tag, by their primary address.
  • Choose contacts… lets you search your contacts and tick the ones to add.
  • From a file or list… takes a CSV or TSV file, or a pasted list. Each address becomes a contact, or is matched to the contact that already has it, and every contact in the list gets a tag, the campaign's name unless you change it. A header row can name the columns: email, name, or first and last name, company and about. Where did these addresses come from? is required and kept with the import. One import can have up to 5,000 people; the file itself is not kept.

The about column, or the line you write on a person's page, fills in {{about}} in the steps: a sentence about why you are writing to them.

A campaign can have up to 2,000 people. After each addition, the page says what happened: how many were added, and how many were skipped because they were already in the campaign, on the do-not-email list, unsubscribed from your Newsletter, had no valid address, or were over the limit.

People who are waiting for or receiving another campaign of the team are held back, so nobody gets two series at once. The page names those campaigns, and its button, such as Add those 3 too, adds them anyway.

People added to a running campaign get step 1 at the next time the send window allows.

Stages

Each person has a stage. Magpie sets these:

  • Queued: waiting for step 1.
  • In progress: sent at least one step, with more to come or waiting for a reply.
  • Replied: answered; nothing more is sent.
  • No reply: the last step got no reply within the campaign's reply wait.
  • Booked a call: booked a time on your Appointments page with the same address, within 90 days of their last step.
  • Bounced: the address does not exist; it goes on the do-not-email list.
  • Unsubscribed: used the unsubscribe link.

You set the others on the person's page or on the board: Interested, Not interested, Booked a call, Signed up and Stopped. Each of these stops further sends to the person. A person who is Stopped, No reply, Interested or Not interested can be put back to Queued, which carries on from the first step they were never sent. Bounced and unsubscribed people cannot be changed: take the address off the do-not-email list first, then add them again.

A person can be removed from a draft. In a campaign that has started, set them to Stopped instead, so the messages sent to them keep their record.

The list and the board

List shows the people with tabs by stage, a search by name or address, and a filter by who they are assigned to. Board shows the same people in a column for each stage. Drag a card to another column to set the person's stage, or use the card's ⇄ menu. A card only moves to a stage it can be set to. Each column shows its first 50 people; the link under it opens the rest in the list.

A person's page shows what was sent to them and when, their replies with Open in Mail, the links they followed, and their next send.

Assign people

Assigned to on a person's page gives them to a member of the team who can use Outreach, such as whoever will take the call. Assigning someone changes nothing about what is sent. Use the filter in the list or on the board to see one member's people.

What happens next

When a campaign names another in What happens next, a person who reaches No reply joins that campaign as Queued, with the same line about them. Their row there says which campaign they came from. If that campaign is a draft or archived, nothing is sent until it runs.
