On a portal's page, choose Share files in the Files band, or drop files anywhere on the page. While the band has no files, it is one large area to choose them from. The Share files drawer lists the files, and its button names the client, such as Share 3 files with Northline Studio. Up to 20 files can be shared at once, each up to 500 MB. A file that cannot be shared is named with the reason, and the others are shared. Only the portal's clients can download them. Each client who can sign in gets an email listing the files, while Email clients is on in the portal's details.

Clients upload the same kinds of file with Upload files on the portal's Overview or Files section, or by dropping files on the page and choosing the Upload button under them. Their files are listed in the same band with who uploaded them, and each upload shows in the portal's activity. A PDF can be opened in PDF Editor from its row.

Stop sharing beside a file stops clients downloading it. The file stays in the Files band, marked as not shared, and Share again shares it again.

Delete beside a file deletes it from Magpie, whoever uploaded it. Clients can no longer download it, and it no longer uses file storage. A deleted file cannot be brought back.

Files elsewhere in Magpie are not shared because they belong to the same client.

File storage

Portal files use file storage, which each person's plan sets (see Plans, limits, and billing). A file your team shares counts against the member who shared it. A file a client uploads counts against the member who created the portal. A file that is no longer shared, or is in an archived portal, still counts until it is deleted. Delete works in an archived portal too.

A file that does not fit in that member's storage is not shared, and the reason says how much room is left. A client is not shown the member's plan: they are asked to have your team make room.

Files that cannot be shared

Any kind of file can be shared, such as Photoshop, SVG, video and audio files, except these:

  • Files that can run programs or change settings on the computer that opens them, such as .exe, .bat, .js, .lnk, .msi and .app files.
  • Office files that can hold macros: .docm, .xlsm and .pptm, and the older .doc, .xls and .ppt. Save them as .docx, .xlsx or .pptx.
  • Word, Excel and PowerPoint files with a password, which cannot be checked for macros. Remove the password to share one.
  • Archives other than ZIP, such as .rar, .7z and .tar.gz, and disk images, such as .iso and .dmg, which cannot be checked. Put their files in a ZIP.

A ZIP is opened and checked for the same kinds, including any ZIPs inside it. A ZIP that holds one of them cannot be shared, and the reason names the file inside.
