Import, export and share Bookmarks
Bring bookmarks in from a browser, download them, save from any page, and share a collection.
Import
Open Import and export under Bookmarks, choose a file and select Import. Magpie accepts:
- An HTML bookmarks file exported from Chrome, Firefox or Safari, or from Pinboard.
- A CSV file with a
urlcolumn. The columnstitle,description,collection,tags,noteandcreated_atare read if present. Raindrop.io CSV exports also work: theirfolder, excerptandcreatedcolumns are read as collection, description and date saved.
Folders become collections. Nested folders are flattened to the innermost folder's name. Bookmarks are imported into the Personal or team you have selected. Addresses that are already saved there are skipped, and so are entries that are not web addresses. Up to 5,000 entries and 8 MB are read per file.
Importing does not visit the pages. To fetch a page's title and image, open the bookmark and choose Check again.
Export
Import and export downloads every bookmark in the selected Personal or team, including archived ones, as HTML, CSV or JSON. The HTML file can be imported into any browser, with collections as folders. Each file includes the address, title, description, collection, tags, note, favorite, read and archived state, and the date saved.
The browser button
Open Browser button under Bookmarks and drag Save to Magpie to your browser's bookmarks bar. On any page, click it to open a small window with the page's address, its title and any text you had selected. Choose a collection, add tags or a note, and select Save bookmark.
The button uses your Magpie sign-in in the same browser and contains no password or access key. It saves to the Personal or team currently selected in Magpie.
Share a collection
Each collection is Private until you change it under Collections and tags.
- Private: only people with access to that Personal or team selection can see it.
- Unlisted: anyone with the link can see it, and search engines are asked not to list it.
- Public: anyone with the link can see it, and search engines may list it.
A shared collection also has an RSS feed of its links: add /feed to its address, or use the RSS feed link on Collections and tags or on the shared page. Anyone with the address can follow the collection in RSS Reader or another feed reader. The feed shows the newest 100 bookmarks.
The shared page shows the collection's name and description and the title, site and description of each bookmark in it. It does not show notes, tags, highlights or who saved them, and it includes only bookmarks you put in that collection. Changing a collection back to Private, or deleting it, stops the link and its feed working.
How pages are checked
When Magpie checks a page it connects only to public web addresses, follows a limited number of redirects, and stops after a small amount of data. Addresses on private networks are never contacted, so an internal link keeps the title you give it.
Nothing from a page is displayed as the page itself. Its title and description are stored as plain text, its article text is rebuilt from plain text elements for Reader view, and its icon and preview image are stored by Magpie, so opening a bookmark does not contact the saved site. Icons are limited to 128 KB and images to 2 MB, and SVG images are not stored.
