Hiring

Write a job, publish it on your team's job board and take applications on its own form.

Each job starts as a draft with its own page and application form. Publishing it will list the job on the team's public job board, where applicants read the description and apply without a Magpie account. Their answers and files go to Hiring, where only your team can open them.

From draft to published job

Enter a job title, and Magpie will create the job as a draft and open its page. Each detail on that page saves as you edit it.

  1. Write the job

The description and requirements accept Markdown. Add the department, location, workplace (on-site, hybrid or remote), employment type, a salary range per year, month or hour in any currency, the number of openings, a hiring manager and a closing date. Internal notes are seen only by the team.

  2. Preview

Until the job is published, Preview under Addresses opens its page as applicants will see it.

  3. Publish job

Publishing will make the page public, start taking applications and list the job on the job board. A job needs a description first, and the line under its title says what to add.

  4. Pause, close or fill

Pause, Close job and Mark filled will stop applications and take the job off the board, and its page will say it is not accepting applications. Reopen job will publish it again. Archive will hide the page and keep the job's candidates in Hiring.

The job board and job pages

Personal and each team have one job board, created with the first job at magpie.diy/jobs/ followed by an address made from the team's name (your name in Personal). Each job's page adds an address made from its title. Neither address changes later, even when the title or the board's name does.

Job board
Its title is Jobs at followed by the board's name. It shows the introduction, then every published job still taking applications, with its location, workplace, employment type and salary. Link to it from your company's website.
Job page
A job's page shows its facts, its description and requirements, the date applications close and the application form, with Apply at the top. Team members who can edit Hiring also see Edit in Magpie on it.
Job search
A job page that takes applications carries the job information search engines read for job search, such as Google for Jobs: the title, description, employment type, location, remote work, salary and closing date.
Share job
On a published job, Share job starts a Social Media post with the job's title and address.

Application questions

Every job has its own application form, and applicants do not need a Magpie account.

Built-in questions
Full name and email address are always asked. Phone number, resume and cover letter can each be Not asked, Optional or Required. A new job requires a resume and asks for the other two as optional.
Your questions
Add short or long answers, URLs, numbers, dates, yes or no, a drop-down menu, multiple choice, checkboxes or a file upload. Wording, choices and Required change in place, and questions reorder by dragging. A removed question stays on the answers already submitted.

Applicants' files

Applicants can upload PDF, Word, text, JPEG, PNG and WebP files of up to 10 MB each, for the resume and for any file upload question. Magpie checks each file's type from its contents, not its name.

Files are stored privately and are never at a public address. Team members who can open Hiring download them from the candidate's page, and deleting a candidate deletes their files.

After someone applies

Confirmation
The job page confirms the application, and names the address the confirmation email was sent to.
Confirmation email
While Confirmation email is on in Hiring settings, as it is from the start, the applicant will be emailed that the application was received. It does not promise a response time. Magpie sends no other email to candidates on its own.
The hiring manager
The job's hiring manager, at first the person who created the job, will get an email with a link to each new application. Choose No one to send none.
Sender and replies
Emails to candidates are headed with the name on the job board. Replies to the confirmation go to the Reply-to address in Hiring settings, when one is set.

The board's name, introduction and time zone

Personal and each team have their own Hiring settings, and each change saves on its own.

Name on the job board
This is the name candidates see on the job board, on job pages and in emails. It starts as the team's name, or yours in Personal. Changing it does not change the board's address.
Introduction
The introduction is shown on the job board, above the list of jobs.
Time zone
A job takes applications until the end of its closing date in this time zone. It starts as the time zone of the person who created the board.
