Bookmarks

Keep an article's text with its bookmark, read it in Reader view and highlight passages.

When a saved page is an article, Bookmarks keeps its text. Reader view shows that text without the rest of the page, highlights and their notes are kept with the bookmark, and the Unread list holds every bookmark you have not marked read or archived.

The article text Bookmarks keeps

When Magpie checks a saved page and finds an article, it keeps the article's text, headings, lists, quotations, code and links. Images, scripts, forms and page styling are not kept. A page that does not look like an article, or that needs a sign-in, has no Reader view; its bookmark still has the address, title and your note.

Reader view shows the kept text, so it opens without contacting the saved site. It says whether the text came from the page or from an RSS Reader entry, and Open original opens the page itself in a new tab.

Reading through the Unread list

A new bookmark is unread, so the Unread list holds every bookmark not yet marked read or archived, whichever collection it is in.

  1. Open Reader view

From the bookmark's row, from its page, or with the r key in the list.

  2. Read to the end

Below the article, Bookmarks names the next unread bookmark and its site.

  3. Mark read and open next

Marks this bookmark read and opens the next unread one, in Reader view when it has one.

  4. Keys while reading

j opens the next unread bookmark, and m, f and e mark this one read, add it to favorites or archive it.

Highlights

Select text in Reader view and choose Highlight selection. Each highlight is listed under the article and on the bookmark's page.

A note on each highlight
Each highlight can have its own note, which changes in place like the bookmark's note.
Who sees them
Highlights on a team's bookmark are visible to everyone in the team, and Personal highlights only to you. A shared collection never shows highlights.
View access
In a team that gives members view access only, members who are not admins can read the article and its highlights but cannot add highlights.
Send to a new note
From a bookmark's More menu, Magpie will open a new note in Notes with the link, your note on the bookmark, and each highlight as a quotation followed by its note.

Bookmarks and RSS Reader

RSS Reader is Magpie's reader for RSS and Atom feeds, websites and Bluesky accounts. Its subscriptions belong to your account, and Bookmarks belong to the Personal or team you have selected.

Save an entry
Save bookmark on an RSS Reader entry saves it to Bookmarks in the Personal or team you have selected. The bookmark records which feed it came from and keeps the entry's text for Reader view, so it stays readable after the entry leaves your RSS Reader.
Saved entries are marked
An entry already saved in the selected Personal or team shows Saved in Bookmarks, which opens the bookmark.
Follow a bookmarked site
From a bookmark's More menu, Magpie will look for the site's RSS or Atom feed and add it to your RSS Reader subscriptions. View access to a team's bookmark is enough to follow its site.
Subscriptions on each plan
A followed site counts as an RSS Reader subscription: up to 10 on the Free plan and 100 on Pro.

How saved pages are checked

When Magpie checks a page, it connects only to public web addresses, follows a limited number of redirects and stops after a small amount of data. An address on a private network is never contacted, so a bookmark to an internal page keeps the title you give it.

A page's title and description are stored as plain text, and its article text is rebuilt from plain text elements. Its icon and preview image are stored by Magpie, up to 128 KB for an icon and 2 MB for an image, and SVG images are not stored. Opening a bookmark does not contact the saved site.
