Trim a screen recording, cut out parts and place images over the video.

The recording editor cuts the start, the end or any part in between, and places images, such as a logo or a diagram, over the video for as long as you choose. Saved edits change what the share page plays and what is downloaded. The original recording file is never changed, so a part you cut can be put back.

Trim and cut

Edit, on the Recordings list, opens the editor once a recording is ready. Its timeline shows the video as segments: the parts that will be kept.

  1. Trim the start or the end

    Drag the edge of a segment.

  2. Cut out a part in the middle

    Pause at the start of the part and choose Split at playhead, then do the same at its end. Select the part and choose Remove segment.

  3. Reset cuts

    Puts the whole recording back.

  4. Keys

    Space plays and pauses, and the arrow keys move one second back or forward. Press ? in the editor to list the keys.

Images over the video

Pause on the moment an image should appear and choose Add image. The image comes from Your images, which can also upload one from your computer, and you drag and resize it on the video.

When it shows
Appears at and On screen for set when the image appears and how long it stays, from a few frames to the whole recording. Dragging its block on the timeline, or either end of the block, does the same.
Several images
Add as many images as you need, and they can be on screen at the same time.
Layer
Bring to front, Bring forward, Send backward and Send to back set which image is on top where images overlap.
Delete image
Removes the selected image, after you confirm.

Saving, and the original file

Cuts and images stay in the editor until you choose Save. Leaving the editor with changes that are not saved asks whether to save or discard them.

Once you save, the share page will skip the removed parts and show the images, and the Recordings list will show the recording's length after the cuts. The recording file itself is never changed: Reset cuts brings back any part you removed, and an image can be moved, retimed or deleted later.

Team admins can also ask the assistant to save cuts or add, change or remove images on a recording named in the conversation. It asks for confirmation in the conversation before it saves.

The MP4 download

A recording downloads as an MP4 file with your saved cuts and images in the video, to post in another place or keep a copy.

Made on the first download
The MP4 is made the first time the recording is downloaded after a save, and kept for later downloads until the next change. The share page says the file is being prepared while it is made.
The Download button
The share page has a Download button for a new recording. Share page settings can hide it from viewers.
Storage
The MP4 is a copy beside the original, and counts toward your storage. When it would not fit, the download is refused and the message says so.

Thumbnail

Thumbnail sets the still frame shown before the recording plays, the picture that appears when its link is pasted into a chat app or posted, and the picture in an emailed invitation to watch.

Pause on the frame you want and choose Use current frame. The thumbnail is saved at once, without Save. Until you choose one, it is a frame from the start of the recording.
