Share a screen recording
Send a recording's link, set up its share page with a transcript, links and a form, email it to contacts, and see who watched.
Every recording has a share page, apart from a private one (see Private recordings). Anyone with its link can watch the recording, so do not use it for material that needs named-recipient access. Share on the Recordings list copies the link or opens your device's share options, and Watch opens the page.
The share page shows the recording, its title, who recorded it, the date and the length. Share and Edit appear on it only for you. Its thumbnail (see Edit a screen recording) is the page's opening image and the picture shown when the link is pasted into a chat app or posted.
Share page settings
In the recording editor, choose File, then Share page settings. Change what you need and choose Save share page.
- Custom address replaces the generated string at the end of the link with words that are easier to read and remember. Leave it blank to keep the generated address; the generated address keeps working either way. A custom address is still an unlisted public link, so anyone who knows or guesses it can open the recording.
- Downloads: Show Download button shows Magpie's Download button on the share page, which downloads an MP4 with your saved cuts and images. It does not change the video player's own browser controls.
- Transcript: choose an editable Magpie Document. The share page shows the Document's current content, including clickable web links, without publishing the Document on its own; editing the Document updates the transcript. On larger screens the video stays in view while the page scrolls through the transcript beside it; on smaller screens the transcript appears after the video.
- Attached form: choose a published Form of the team. It is shown beside the recording in the form's own appearance, in the place of the transcript: with both chosen, the share page shows the form. Responses arrive with the Form's other responses (see Review and export Form responses).
- Important links: up to 12. Each has Link text and a Web address, and appears as a large button below the video that opens separately, so the recording stays available. Highlight shows a link in the accent colour, for the one you most want people to open.
Invite people to watch
Invite people to watch, in the editor's File menu, emails the recording's link to contacts of the team who have an email address. Enter a Subject and an optional Note (quoted under the recording), tick the Recipients and choose Review invitation. Nothing is sent until you review and confirm; Discard draft drops it. Replies go to your email address. Emailing invitations needs a paid plan.
Text or iMessage it, on the same page, gives the link to paste into a message; it shows a preview of the recording when it arrives.
Analytics
Analytics, in the editor's File menu, shows what happens on the share page: views, how many visits started the video and watched to the end, link clicks and downloads. Below are How far people watch, views per day over the last 30 days, Where views came from (the page a visitor came from, when the browser says), Link clicks for each important link, By invitation (how each person you emailed watched, with their name and address), and Recent activity. The Recordings list shows each recording's view count.
Your own visits are counted separately, as are the requests apps such as Slack and iMessage make to build a link preview, so pasting a link somewhere does not report a view nobody made. Watch and click figures come from the browser playing the video, so a visitor who blocks scripts is counted as a view and nothing else. Apart from the people you invited by email, nothing identifies a visitor to you. Counting starts when a share page is first opened.
Private recordings
A recording a webinar uses as its replay or as a pre-recorded webinar is private, and so is a webinar's own recording. Only you can open it in Screen Recorder. Its link does not work, and it has no share page settings, invitations or custom address and cannot be shown in a Supporters post. Who can watch it is set on the webinar (see Webinars).
In the native app
Share recording link sends the share page's address, and Share recording file shares the final MP4. View analytics shows the totals, watch progress, link clicks, downloads, recent days and the sites views came from; visitor details and the full activity list are on the website. Share page settings changes the custom address, the Download button, the transcript Document, the attached Form and the important links, with the same rules as the website.
If a share link does not open, or analytics stay empty after people have watched, Contact support.
