Store
Buyers pay for Store orders on Stripe's checkout page, with discount codes, gift cards and tax.
A buyer fills a cart in your Store and pays on a checkout page hosted by Stripe, without making an account. The money goes to your team's own Stripe account, and Magpie adds no fee to Store sales. Buy links, QR codes and buy buttons open the same checkout from another website or a printed page.
Get started freeCart and checkout
At checkout, Magpie checks the prices, stock, shipping and total against your Store and holds the items. Stripe's page takes the shipping address and the payment, and the order is marked paid when Stripe confirms it.
- Guest buyers
- Buyers need no account and get a private link to their order by email. A buyer signed in to Magpie can keep the order in Your orders and reuse a saved address.
- Payment methods
- Cards and wallets is the default. Payment methods turned on in Stripe offers the methods you turn on in your Stripe Dashboard, such as bank debits; an order paid that way shows Processing and keeps its items until the payment succeeds or fails.
Your Stripe account, and no Magpie fee
A team admin connects one Stripe account on Payments, shared with Supporters, paid Forms and invoice card payments. Checkout stays off until the account is ready.
Magpie adds no fee to Store sales. Stripe's processing fee is taken from each payment, and each order shows its fee and net amount. Accounting adds paid orders, fees and payouts to the books.
Your Stripe account is the seller: its business name appears on the checkout page, and it is responsible for refunds, disputes, tax and customer support.
Discount codes and automatic discounts
A buyer types a code in the cart; an automatic discount applies to every cart it fits.
- What a discount gives
- A discount gives a percentage or an amount off, free shipping, or buy X get Y, on the whole order, chosen products or chosen collections.
- Limits
- A discount can have start and end times, a minimum amount or number of items, a limit on total uses and on uses per customer, and a customer segment. An unpaid checkout gives its use back.
- Combining
- Discounts combine only when set to. Otherwise the buyer gets the larger one, and the cart says why a code was not used.
Gift cards and store credit
A gift card is a code with a balance at your Store. In the cart it pays after discounts, for items and shipping; Stripe's page takes the rest, and an order the card covers in full needs no Stripe page.
- Selling gift cards
- A gift card product has fixed amounts and an optional custom range. The buyer has the card emailed to someone on a date they choose, or keeps it.
- Store credit
- Issue store credit or a card you give away, or refund an order as store credit instead of through Stripe.
- Expiry and fees
- A bought card and store credit never expire and carry no fee. Only a card you give away can have an expiry date.
Tax with Stripe Tax
Store does not calculate tax itself. With Calculate tax with Stripe Tax on, Stripe calculates each checkout's tax in your own Stripe account, for the places where your Stripe account has a tax registration. Registering, filing and paying the tax stay with you.
- Prices include tax
- Stripe adds tax to your prices at checkout, or your listed prices include it.
- Business tax IDs
- Buyers can enter a tax ID, such as a VAT number, and Stripe can apply a reverse charge where your registrations allow.
- Orders and Accounting
- Each paid order keeps the tax on each product and on shipping, and Accounting records it under Sales tax payable.
- Gift cards
- While Stripe Tax is on, gift cards are not taken at checkout: Stripe can lower an order only with a discount, which would lower the tax.
Terms, Newsletter sign-up and checkout reminders
Your Store's own Checkout page shows the terms box and the email box before Stripe's page opens, so they also apply to an order a gift card pays in full.
- Terms at checkout
- Choose a published Store page, such as your terms of sale, and buyers will have to tick a box agreeing to it. The order records which page and when.
- Newsletter sign-up
- A buyer who ticks the box for news and offers will be added to your team's Newsletter when the order is paid, unless the address unsubscribed before.
- Checkout reminders
- When a checkout expires unpaid, a buyer who ticked the box will get one email 1, 3 or 6 hours or a day later, as you choose. Its link puts the items back in their cart, with a discount code if you choose one.
Buy links, buy buttons and quote requests
Share, on a live product, lists a buy link for each option and HTML for a buy button, with a QR code for each address as PNG or SVG.
- Buy links
- A buy link opens your Store's Checkout page with one of that product, or up to 100 when the address sets a quantity, and keeps the buyer's cart for later.
- Buy button
- Paste it into any website. Its script reads the current price, or Sold out, from your Store each time the page opens.
- Quote requests
- With Quote requests on, the shopper can send the cart to you with a message instead of paying. Record an order from the quote at the prices you agree, or make a draft invoice in Invoicing.
