Discounts are in Store › Discounts. A discount code is typed by the buyer in their cart. An automatic discount applies to every cart it fits, with no code.

Add a discount

Select New discount code and enter the code, or New automatic discount and enter the name buyers will see. Codes are 3 to 40 letters, numbers, dashes or underscores, and are not case sensitive for buyers.

A new discount is a draft that buyers cannot use. Its page opens next: set what it gives, then change Status to Active. A discount cannot be turned on until it has a value, and Products or Collections when it applies to them.

What a discount gives

  • Percentage off takes a percentage off the items it applies to. The result is rounded down to the smallest unit of the Store's currency.
  • Amount off takes a fixed amount off the items it applies to, once per order. It never takes the items below zero.
  • Free shipping makes the chosen shipping method free when at least one item it applies to is shipped.
  • Buy X get Y discounts Y items for every X + Y qualifying items in the cart. The cheapest qualifying items get the discount. Type 100 after At to give them free, or a lower percentage. Times per order limits how many groups are discounted in one order.

Which items it applies to

Applies to is the whole order, chosen products, or chosen collections. Choose the products or collections from the button on the discount's page. A collection's products are read when the cart is shown, so products added to the collection later are included.

A minimum (an amount or a number of items) counts only the items the discount applies to, at their prices before any discount.

Dates and limits

Starts and Ends are a date and time in your time zone. Leave Ends empty for no end. Total uses limits how many orders can use the discount. Uses per customer is counted by the email address the buyer enters at checkout.

A use is held while the buyer's checkout is open. When a checkout ends without payment, or the buyer changes their cart, the use is given back, so an abandoned checkout does not use up a limited code.

Combining discounts

Combines with other discounts is off for a new discount. Discounts that combine are applied together. When discounts that do not combine could apply to the same cart, the buyer gets the one with the larger discount, and the cart says why their code was not used.

What buyers and orders show

The cart shows each discount and the total after it. Checkout works the discount out again before the payment page opens, and stops with the reason when a code can no longer be used. Stripe's payment page and receipt show the discount amount.

Each order keeps the discount it was charged with: the code, the amount, and each item's share of it. Accounting records Store discounts under Refunds and discounts. The discount's page lists the paid orders that used it.

Delete a discount

Delete discount in the discount's More menu deletes a discount no order has used. A discount that orders have used is archived instead: buyers can no longer use it, and its orders keep their discount.

If a buyer was charged without a discount that their cart showed, note the order number and Contact support.
