Store

Sell files people download, with editions, download limits, new versions and licence keys.

A digital product is delivered as files instead of being shipped. After paying, the buyer downloads them from their order page or from the links in their confirmation email, for the period and number of downloads the product allows. A product can also give each buyer a licence key from the keys you add.

Files

Files on a digital product's page lists what buyers get. Choose a file from your file library or upload one. A product can have up to 50 files, each up to 500 MB.

File types
PDF, EPUB, ZIP, MP3, M4A, WAV, MP4, MOV, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, TIFF, TTF, OTF, WOFF and WOFF2. A file is accepted only when its contents match its type.
Editions
Add an option such as Format with PDF and EPUB, then choose the option each file goes with. A file for every option, such as a bonus chapter, goes with each edition.
Private until paid
Files are stored privately, outside the public website. A download opens only from a paid order: the signed-in buyer's own, or a guest's private order link.
Ready to go live
A live product needs a file for every option that is for sale.
In a bundle
A bundle can include digital products. Their files are delivered with the bundle, under the bundle's own download period and downloads per file.
Storage
Files count toward the storage of the member who uploaded them.

Download period and downloads per file

Downloads on the product's page sets how many days after purchase buyers can download its files, and how many times they can download each file. Leave either empty for no limit. Each order keeps the limits the product had when it was paid.

Reset downloads
The order's page shows how many times each file was downloaded and when the period ends. Reset downloads sets every count back to 0 and starts a new period from today.
Refunded orders
Files download only while the order is paid or partly refunded.

Send a new version

  1. Replace the file

Replace… puts a new file in place of the old one. Buyers will get the new file from their orders, and their downloads of it are counted from 0 again.

  2. Email the buyers

Tick the box to email buyers when you replace a file, and each buyer who can still download it will be sent a link to their order within a few minutes, in the Store's language. A buyer with several orders gets one email.

Licence keys

Licence keys on the product's page holds the keys to give buyers, such as software activation codes.

Add keys
Paste them one on each line, or choose a text or CSV file, up to 5,000 at a time, for the product or for one of its options. A key already added is skipped.
One key for each unit sold
Each unit sold gets an unused key, shown on the buyer's order page, in their confirmation email and on the order in Store.
Stock is the unused keys
An option is sold out when its keys run out, and keys held by checkouts in progress are not given to anyone else.
Encrypted
Keys are stored encrypted. A key given to a buyer stays theirs, even if the order is refunded.

The buyer's downloads

Checkout asks for no shipping address when every product in the cart is digital, and an order of downloads only is marked fulfilled when it is paid. A guest is emailed a private link to their order page, where the files and keys are.

A buyer signed in to Magpie finds every file and key they bought under Your orders › Your downloads, grouped by Store. A guest order joins it when the buyer chooses Add to your orders on the order page. PDFs are delivered exactly as you uploaded them.

Payment, plans and permissions

Buyers pay on Stripe's checkout page, through the team's own Stripe account, which is the seller. Magpie adds no fee to Store sales, and Store is on every plan.

Team admins, and members given the Manage products permission, add files and keys. Reset downloads needs the Ship and edit orders permission.
