Store
Sell at a market, fair or counter with the Magpie app, from the same products and stock as your online Store.
Sell, in the Store screen of the Magpie app, records sales on a phone: scan or choose products, apply a discount code, take cash and email a receipt. Each sale becomes a Store order marked In person, takes its items from the stock at the location you sell from, and counts in your Store's reports. At the end of the day, you count the cash and close the register.

Choose the location
When your Store has more than one stock location, choose the one you are selling from. The app keeps the choice on that phone.
Open the register
Enter the starting cash and open the register. Every phone selling at that location uses the same register.
Add products
Tap a product, search by name, SKU or barcode, or scan barcodes with the phone's camera, one unit per scan. Any product that is not archived can be sold, including drafts that are not live online.
Apply discounts
Enter a code the customer gives you. Automatic discounts apply as they do online, and prices come from your Store.
Take cash
Enter the cash handed over, or nothing for the exact amount, and the app shows the change. Add the customer's email address to send a receipt.
Receipts
- Email receipt
- A receipt is emailed with the sale, or afterwards to an address you enter, in your Store's language. It lists the items, discount, total, how the customer paid and the change. A sale's receipt can be emailed up to 5 times, counting the first.
- Share receipt link
- Share receipt link opens the phone's share sheet with a link to the customer's order page, to send by text message or another app.
Counting the cash and closing the register
A register is one location's sales from opening to the cash count at closing. Register, on the Sell screen, shows the starting cash, cash sales, cash refunds and the cash expected.
Cash expected
The cash expected is the starting cash plus cash sales, less cash refunds paid from the register.
Count and close
Enter the cash counted and close the register. When the count differs from the cash expected, the register will not close without a reason, which is kept with the count.
On the website
Store › In person lists every register, newest first, with its sales, cash expected, cash counted and difference. A register someone forgot to close can be closed there.
Orders, stock and reports
- Orders
- Each sale is a Store order marked In person and recorded as handed over, with where it was sold and, for cash, the amount handed over and the change. The channel filter in Store › Orders lists in-person sales, and the CSV export includes the channel.
- Stock
- A sale takes its items from the location chosen on the phone, then from other locations when it has too few. A refund that restocks puts them back where they were taken.
- Refunds
- Refund a sale from its order, as for any Store order. A cash refund is paid from the register open at that location and counts in its cash expected.
- Customers, reports and Accounting
- A sale with an email address is filed under that customer, as an online order is. Reports include in-person sales, with a row of their own under Sales by source, and Accounting adds cash sales to Undeposited funds.
Tax, gift cards and the connection
Tax is not added to sales made in person, as for orders made by hand: Stripe Tax calculates tax only on Stripe's checkout page. Gift cards cannot be sold or used at the register, personalisation fields are not asked, and a pay-what-you-want product sells at its suggested price.
Each sale is sent to Magpie as it is made, so the phone needs an internet connection. A sale sent again after a lost connection is recorded once. Cash sales need no Stripe account.
Who can sell
Team admins can sell. In Who can work in Store, give another team member Sell in person: it lets them use Sell, send receipts, and open and close registers in the app, and gives no other access, so they do not see every order. Store › In person and the orders on the website need See orders.
