Open this in Magpie

The Magpie browser extension opens your Password Vault from a button in the browser's toolbar. It works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. The extension is in development and is not yet listed in the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons.

The extension lists the logins in your Password Vault. It can fill a login or a two-factor code into the page you are on, copy a username or password, add a login, change a login's password, and generate passwords. Other kinds of records, and other changes, are on the website.

Select the Magpie button in the toolbar, then Sign in. A Magpie page opens in a new window. If you are not signed in to Magpie in that browser, sign in first, in any of the usual ways. The page shows which account you are signed in to; choose Connect. The window closes and the extension is signed in.

The extension never receives your Magpie password. Its sign-in can be used only for Password Vault: it cannot open your Notes, files or any other part of Magpie.

If the page says "This connection request is not valid", choose Sign in in the extension again.

Unlock and lock

Enter your Password Vault password in the extension to unlock it. The extension locks again after the time set in Password Vault on the website (15 minutes without use unless you changed it). It also locks when you choose Lock, when you quit the browser, and when you sign out of the extension.

Changing your Magpie password or two-factor setup signs the extension out. Sign in again to keep using it.

Your Password Vault is decrypted in the extension, as it is on the website. Magpie cannot open it. See Password Vault: passwords and private information.

Fill a page

Open the extension on the page you want to sign in to. Logins saved for that site are listed first, under Logins for the site's name. Choose Fill to put the username and password into the page's sign-in form. The popup closes so you can submit the form. For a login with a two-factor code, Fill code puts the current code into the page's code field.

You can also press Ctrl+Shift+L (Command+Shift+L on a Mac). When exactly one login is saved for the site and the extension is unlocked, it fills that login. Otherwise it opens the extension. You can change the shortcut in your browser's extension shortcut settings.

The extension fills a page only when you choose Fill or press the shortcut, and only when:

  • the page is secure (its address starts with https://)
  • the login's website is the same site as the page. www. is ignored, but other parts of the address are not: a login for example.com does not fill accounts.example.com. To use a login on a second address, add that address to the login on the website.
  • the page has exactly one sign-in form the extension can recognize

Otherwise nothing is filled and the extension says why. Copy the password instead.

Once a password is in a page's form, that page can read it, as with any password manager. This is why the extension fills only the site the login is saved for.

Add a login or change a password

Add a login opens a form with the current site's address already filled in. Enter the username, then type a password or choose Generate, and choose Save. The login is added to your Password Vault; choose Fill to put it into the page.

Change password under a login replaces its password. Type the new one or choose Generate, then Save. The previous password is kept in the login's password history, which you can see on the website. If the login was changed somewhere else since the extension loaded it, the change is not saved; open the extension again and repeat it.

Copy a password

Search by a login's title, username or website. Choose Copy username or Copy password to copy it to the clipboard. The extension does not clear the clipboard afterwards.

For a login with a two-factor code, choose Show code. The extension shows the code and the seconds until it changes; Copy code copies the one shown.

Generate a password makes a new random password with the length and characters you choose. Copy copies it. It is not saved anywhere: to keep it, add it to a login on the website.

Signed-in apps

Signed-in apps in Account settings lists the Magpie app and every browser extension signed in to your account, with when each was signed in and last used. Choose Sign out beside one and confirm to sign it out. It will need to sign in again to use your account. Signing in on the website itself is not listed.

A session that is not used for 90 days signs out without this.
