The IT person at a small company

Every laptop has a tag and an owner, and everyone's mailbox is at the company's domain. Staff send IT requests on a form, and your runbooks are documents.

The company works in one Magpie team, and you are its admin. You choose which areas each person uses.

A loaner laptop in Harbourline Architects’ Asset Tracker: checked out to Tara Nolan and due back on 26 October, with its tag, serial number, model, location, condition and category, then its notes and history.

This combination of six Magpie areas fits the IT person at a small company.

Asset Tracker
Asset Tracker records every device, who has it and its history.
Mail
Mail gives the company's domain its mailboxes and addresses.
DNS
DNS hosts the domain's records, with a history of each change.
Issues
Issues takes IT requests from a form, and tracks each one to done.
Password Vault
Password Vault keeps your admin logins encrypted in your browser.
Documents
Documents holds your runbooks, for the whole team to open.

Every laptop has a tag, an owner and a history.

Asset Tracker keeps each device with its tag, serial number, location and condition. Purchase and warranty details are seen by admins only.

You assign a laptop to someone, or lend a loaner with a due date. Overdue loans have their own tab. A device can be marked in maintenance, lost or retired.

Everyone's mailbox is at the company's domain, and you set it up.

The Mail area gives the company's domain its mailboxes, aliases such as info@, and a catch-all. A mailbox can be shared by the team or private to one person.

Magpie lists the SPF, DKIM and DMARC records and checks them. Webmail has folders, snooze and scheduled sending.

Harbourline Architects’ domain harbourline.test in Mail: verified, with 22 mailboxes and 31 addresses, a catch-all delivering to info@, its DNS provider, and the website live at the domain.

The domain's records are in one place, with a history of every change.

DNS hosts the domain's records, from A and MX to TXT and SRV. You can import the records you have, and export a zone file.

Check record looks a record up as the world sees it. Mail and Websites add the records they need for you.

Staff send IT requests on a form, and each one waits in Triage.

Issues tracks requests and fixes, each with an ID, a priority and an assignee. A form takes requests into Triage, with the sender's email.

Your own statuses, fields and automations fit how you work. A saved view keeps your queue one click away.

Your admin logins and recovery codes are encrypted in your browser.

Password Vault keeps your logins with their two-factor codes, API credentials, SSH keys and recovery codes. Everything is encrypted in your browser before it is stored.

The vault is yours, not the team's. A recovery key and an encrypted backup keep you from being locked out.

Sam Kowalski’s Password Vault: the domain registrar, the office router, backup storage credentials, the file server’s SSH key, the office Wi-Fi and the printer lease portal, each with its tags.

Your runbooks are documents the whole team can open.

Documents holds the runbooks, such as setting up a new starter or running the backups. Headings, tables and numbered steps lay them out.

Named versions keep each revision. A runbook exports as PDF for the office binder.

Five more areas cover sensitive files, scripts, how-to videos, projects and shared equipment.

Secure Files
Secure Files keeps sensitive files encrypted in your account, and shares one by an expiring link.
Git Repositories
Git Repositories keeps your scripts and configuration under version control.
Screen Recorder
Screen Recorder records a how-to for staff, with a link to share.
Kanban Boards
Kanban Boards tracks projects such as an office move.
Resource Booking
Resource Booking lets staff book shared equipment, such as the projector.

Plans

A company fits the Team plan, with each member of staff in the team. Mail at the company's domain needs a paid plan.

A guest, such as a contractor given one area, takes no member place. Prices are on the Pricing page.

Other people who run a small company's systems have pages of their own.

Questions IT admins ask

Can I track every laptop and who has it?

Yes. Each device has a tag, a serial number, a location and a condition. Assigning it records who is responsible, and its history keeps every change.

Can I lend out a loaner laptop?

Yes. You check it out to a member or a contact, with a due date. Overdue loans have their own tab, and check-in records its condition.

Can I import our device list?

Yes. Asset Tracker imports and exports a CSV file of up to 5 MB. Purchase and warranty details stay visible to admins only.

Can I set up email for the whole company?

Yes. The Mail area gives your domain mailboxes, aliases and a catch-all. A mailbox can be shared by the team or private to one person.

Can we keep our domain where it is?

Yes. Magpie lists the records to add at your current DNS provider, and checks them. You can also move the domain's DNS to Magpie and import its records.

Can staff send IT requests?

Yes. A form takes requests into Triage, with a title, a description and the sender's email. Only people who can edit issues see that email.

Can I keep the admin passwords encrypted?

Yes. Password Vault encrypts your logins, API credentials, SSH keys and recovery codes in your browser. It keeps the two-factor codes for each login too.

Can I choose which areas each person uses?

Can staff book shared equipment?
