Software startups and small product teams

Plan the work in cycles, keep the code in your own repositories, design and document the product, and hire the people who build it, in one account.

Issues tracks bugs and product work in cycles and projects, and takes bug reports from a public form. Git Repositories hosts the code, Design Canvas and Design System hold the screens and the rules your coding assistant reads, and Documents holds the specs. Hiring, Agreements and E-Signatures cover the first hires, NDAs and SAFEs.

Fernway Labs’ Cycle 14 in Issues: four issues completed, four in progress and three remaining, then the issues still to do and in progress, each with its identifier and its project, such as iOS app or Outfitter dashboard.

Bugs and product work, in cycles, projects and a roadmap

Each issue keeps an identifier such as MAG-12 for good, with a status, priority, assignee, labels and sub-issues. A cycle is one week, two weeks or dates you choose, counting what is completed, in progress and remaining, and a project groups its issues with a lead, milestones and a target date on the Roadmap.

A public form takes bug reports from customers without a Magpie account, and they wait in Triage until a member accepts one, cancels it or marks it a duplicate. Each team sets its own statuses, custom fields and automation rules.

Fernway Labs’ public form for reporting a problem with the Fernway app, opened without a Magpie account: the form’s instructions, then a customer’s report that Sunday cannot be chosen for pickup, saying what happened and on which phone.

Private repositories your team clones and pushes to

Git connects over HTTPS with an access token as the password, and a project comes in with its whole history in one push. Members with Can edit push, members with View only clone and pull, and a contractor can join as a guest who uses the team's repositories and nothing else of the team.

A repository's page shows the files on main, the README as a document and the commit history. A public repository can be cloned by anyone without signing in, and a files website in Websites can publish again on each push to its branch.

Screens, clickable prototypes and handoff to developers

Lay out screens in Frames with Auto Layout, and keep buttons and fields the same with Components, Variants and Variables, with modes such as light and dark. A team admin publishes them as a Library for the team's other Design files.

Link Frames into a Prototype and share a link anyone can open without signing in. Inspect copies a Layer's CSS, each Layer can be marked Ready for development with a note and an implementation path, and a Variable's Code name records the name developers use.

The design rules your coding assistant reads before it builds

Copy Magpie's prompt, run it with your coding assistant in the repository, and upload the file it writes. Tokens, components, patterns and rules the code states are added as approved, and conventions inferred from repeated code wait under Needs review.

Export writes DESIGN_SYSTEM.md, critical rules first, with tokens.json and tokens.css, and gives a section to paste into AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md. An unlisted or public system serves its current Markdown at a stable address for an assistant to fetch.

For developers in Fernway Labs’ Fernway UI documentation, with assistant.md, design-system.json, tokens.json and tokens.css to download or link for a coding assistant.

Specs, decisions and docs, reviewed with suggestions

Write in Documents with headings, tables, code blocks and a table of contents, and save named versions such as Before review. Teammates comment on selected text and suggest new wording, which changes the document only when an editor accepts it.

Share one document with a customer or an advisor, who joins as a guest who can open only that document, or turn on a link anyone can read without signing in. Documents import and export DOCX, Markdown and HTML.

The first hires: a job board, a pipeline and scorecards

Each job has a public page and application form on the team's job board, with the job data search engines read for job search. Applicants need no account, and their resumes are stored privately for the team.

Move applications through each job's stages, and Schedule interview lists the times when every interviewer is free, from their calendars. Interviewers submit scorecards before they see each other's, and a candidate is emailed a rejection only when you choose to send one.

Schedule an interview for Aisha Rahman, a candidate for Fernway Labs’ Senior iOS engineer job: a Technical interview with Ravi Iyer and Mateo Ruiz chosen as interviewers, and the start times when both are free.

SAFEs, NDAs and cloud agreements, filled in and signed

The Library has Y Combinator's post-money SAFEs and pro rata side letter, mutual NDAs, and Common Paper's cloud service, pilot and data processing agreements, each copied word for word from its publisher. Answer an agreement's questions, and its text fills in as you go.

Send for signature makes a PDF and an E-Signatures request with each party as a signer, and signers need no Magpie account. Magpie is not a law firm: have a lawyer review an agreement before anyone signs it.

Chat, demo calls, recordings, the deck, a landing page and passwords

Team chat
Channels with threads and reactions, direct messages, and a guest such as a contractor in one channel without the rest of the team.
Meetings
A booking page for demo calls, offering the times your calendar leaves free, with a Zoom or Google Meet link on each meeting.
Screen Recorder
Record a demo or a bug's steps with your camera, cut it, and share a page with a transcript and link buttons.
Presentations
The pitch deck, with speaker notes, published as a version anyone with the link can view, and exported as a PDF.
Websites and Mail
A landing page at your domain, from the editor or from files in a repository, and mailboxes at the domain that the team shares.
Password Vault
Each person's own vault, encrypted in the browser, for logins, API keys and SSH keys. A Git access token can be saved to it as it is made.

From a customer's bug report to the cycle

  1. The customer reports it

They fill in the public form with a title, what happened and an optional contact email. They need no Magpie account and see none of your issues.

  2. An automation sets its priority

A rule that runs when a public form is submitted can make every report High priority.

  3. A member reviews it in Triage

Accept it, cancel it, or mark it a duplicate of an existing issue such as MAG-123. The review is recorded on the issue.

  4. It joins the cycle

Give it an assignee and the current cycle, whose page counts it as remaining until work starts.

  5. Its completion is counted

Moving it to a completed status counts toward its cycle, its project and milestone, and the project's progress on the Roadmap.

  6. Webhooks send the events

A webhook can send issue.created to your own tools when the report arrives, and issue.completed when it is done, signed with the webhook's secret.

Bringing the team and the work in

  1. Create the team

Create a team and invite the people building the product, and contractors as guests. Help: Create and manage a team.

  2. Import the issues

Upload a GitHub Issues export saved with GitHub CLI, or a CSV file from another tracker, up to 200 issues at a time. Help: Import and export issues.

  3. Push the code

Create a repository, make an access token, and push your project with its commits. Help: Clone and push with a token or SSH key.

  4. Turn on cycles

A team admin turns on cycle planning and sets the team's statuses. Help: Plan issues in cycles.

  5. Open the job board

Write the first job and publish it when you are hiring. Help: Create a job and publish its page.

Plans

A product team fits the Team plan, at one price for the team: up to 25 members, every Team chat message kept, Video Chat interviews, and Mail's mailboxes at your domain. Guests such as contractors take no place on the plan: 100 on the Team plan, 10 on the free plan.

On the free plan a team has up to 3 members and 5 Team chat channels showing their 2,000 most recent messages. Pro, for one person, adds API keys and raises the longest screen recording from 3 to 30 minutes. Prices are on the Pricing page.

Questions startup teams ask

Can we move our issues from GitHub or another tracker?

Save a repository's issues as JSON with GitHub CLI and upload the file: titles, descriptions, labels, the first assignee and whether each was open or closed come in, with the GitHub number kept as the Original ID. From another tracker, upload a CSV file and choose which column fills each field. One import creates up to 200 issues, and every row is checked before any is created.

Can an issue show its pull requests on GitHub?

Link a GitHub repository to a project, and each of the project's issues has a Development section. It suggests a branch name made from the issue's identifier and title, and lists the pull requests and commits you add to the issue by their GitHub address.

Can we keep our code in Magpie?

Create a repository and push your project to it over HTTPS, with its commits, branches and tags, using an access token as the password. Anyone who can read the repository can clone it with ordinary Git, and a credential helper such as Keychain can keep the token. A token follows its account, so someone who leaves the team can no longer push.

Can a contractor work on our code without seeing everything else?

Invite them to the team as a guest with Git Repositories: they use the team's repositories under the team's Member access and see none of its other areas. A guest can also be let into one Team chat channel.

Can customers report bugs without an account?

Create a public issue form with your own instructions and, if you choose, a project for its reports. Customers give a title, what happened and an optional contact email, which only members who can edit issues see. Each report waits in Triage, and a connection that sends many reports has to wait before it can send more.

Is there an API and webhooks for issues?

The REST API lists, reads, creates and updates issues, and lists and adds their comments, with an API key, which acts as the person who made it. Team admins add webhooks that send signed issue, comment and project events to an HTTPS address, with up to 5 attempts for each event, all with the same event ID.

Can we run two-week sprints?

A team admin turns on cycle planning, and members create cycles of one week, two weeks or custom dates that do not overlap. A cycle's page counts its issues as Completed, In progress and Remaining, and unfinished issues can be moved to the next cycle together. Whatever your statuses are called, their category decides what counts as completed.

Can we show a prototype to a customer?

Present makes a link to a Flow as it is at that moment, which anyone can open in a browser without signing in, with Back, Restart and Full screen. It shows only the Frames the Flow reaches, not other Pages, comments or history, so present again after further changes.

Can our coding assistant follow our design system?

Export DESIGN_SYSTEM.md at Compact, Standard or Complete detail, with critical rules first and each component's source file, and paste the section the Export page gives into AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md. A system that is unlisted or public, with its For developers section shared, serves its current Markdown at its address followed by /assistant.md.

Can investors sign a SAFE in Magpie?

Start one of Y Combinator's post-money SAFEs from the Library, with a valuation cap, a discount or MFN, answer its questions, and choose Send for signature. The company's officer and the investor each sign through a link of their own without a Magpie account, and the next investor's SAFE starts with your company's answers. Have a lawyer review it first.

Can we send an NDA before a demo?

The Library has mutual NDAs from Common Paper, Bonterms and oneNDA, and Papertrail's short NDA. Fill in the parties and the purpose, and E-Signatures sends each party a link to sign. When the last one signs, everyone gets the signed PDF and a certificate of completion.

Will our jobs appear in job search?

A job page that takes applications carries the job information search engines read for job search, such as Google for Jobs: the title, description, employment type, location, remote work, salary and closing date. Share job starts a Social Media post with the job's title and address.

Can we interview candidates over video?

Schedule interview lists the start times when every interviewer is free and adds the interview to the team's Calendar. Magpie Video Chat creates a call with places for 6 people, which the candidate joins from the link in their invitation without an account. Or enter a phone number or another meeting link.

Can we publish our docs site from a repository?

A files website can take its files from a repository in the team's Git Repositories, and each push to its branch publishes it again. A repository with a content/ folder is built into pages from Markdown and Twig templates, with a sitemap and a feed, and a team admin can show the site at your domain.

Can someone outside the team review a spec?

Share the document with them by handle with Can review, and they will join as a guest who can open that document and nothing else. They comment on selected text and suggest wording that changes the document only when an editor accepts it. A link anyone can read without signing in can be turned on too.

Can customers book a demo with us?

Meetings gives each person a meeting page with Meeting Types, offering only the times their schedule and a connected Google Calendar leave free, in the visitor's time zone. Each meeting can get a Zoom call or a Google Meet link, and Slack can post new, moved and cancelled meetings to a channel.

Can we record a product demo?

Screen Recorder records a screen, a window or a tab with your camera in a bubble, and can scroll a script from a Document on a teleprompter. Cut parts out, then share a page anyone with the link can watch, with a transcript and link buttons. Analytics counts the views and how far people watched.

Can we use our company domain for email?

Mail adds mailboxes and aliases at your domain, such as support@ delivering to the people who answer it, connected with records at your current DNS provider or by moving the domain's DNS to Magpie. A team mailbox opens for every member, with the same folders and read status for all of them.

Can we get our work out again?

Clone any repository with its whole history. Issues export as CSV or JSON with comments and activity, Documents as DOCX, Markdown or HTML, Design files as SVG, PNG or PDF, and a Design System as design-system.json with tokens.json and tokens.css.
