Convert many images at once with Batch
Set resize, format, and file-size rules once and apply them to a folder of images, then download a zip or save everything to Magpie.
Batch is Image Converter's rule-based workflow: set a resize, format, and
file-size rule once, and apply it to many images without opening and cropping
each one individually. It is its own page at /image-converter/batch, reached
from the Image Converter section in the sidebar or the Batch button in the
page bar.
Add files
- Choose files picks several files at once from your device.
- Choose folder picks every image inside a folder, where your browser supports it. A folder of photos does not need to be added to your Magpie image library first.
- Choose from Magpie adds existing library images to the batch.
Files appear in a Files list with their sizes, and a × on each row removes one. The Rules section appears once there is at least one file.
Rules
Batch rules apply to every file:
- Maximum width / height scales each image down to fit, keeping its own aspect ratio — a portrait photo and a landscape photo in the same batch each come out at the right shape, not squeezed to match. Don't enlarge smaller images is on by default, so a 900px photo stays 900px rather than being blown up to your maximum.
- Crop is either No crop (each image keeps its own shape) or Centre crop to a ratio — useful when every output truly needs to be the same shape, such as a grid of square thumbnails. Batch only offers a centre crop; it does not try to guess the interesting part of 100 different photos.
- Format, Quality, and Set a maximum file size work the same way they do for a single image — see JPEG vs PNG vs WebP vs AVIF and Crop, resize, and save an image with Image Converter.
- Remove metadata is on by default, same as Single image.
- Filenames can keep each original name, add a suffix or a prefix, or number the files in order. The text field beside it is labelled for whichever rule you chose: a suffix, a prefix, or the base name that the numbers are added to.
- When finished chooses the destination: Download as a ZIP or Save all to Magpie.
Preview before converting everything
Preview the first 5 runs your current rules against the first five files and shows the resulting dimensions and size, so you can check the rules before committing to the whole batch. Nothing else is converted.
Converting
Convert all processes every file. A small batch finishes immediately; a
larger one shows a progress bar ("42 of 84 converted") while it works in the
background. Keep the tab open to watch progress, or come back to
/image-converter/batch later, where Earlier batches lists your finished
batches with a Download link.
One failed file (an unsupported or corrupt image, say) does not stop the rest of the batch. When it finishes, Download all (zip) and Save all to Magpie are both available regardless of which destination you originally chose, and the results list shows which files succeeded and which did not, with a reason.
Individual results also appear on Converted images
(/image-converter/converted) — see Crop, resize, and save an image with Image Converter.
