Write and organize a book
Build a manuscript from front matter, chapters, back matter, and set-aside sections.
A book is a manuscript made from ordered sections. Front matter appears before numbered chapters, chapters form the main body, and back matter appears afterward. Set aside keeps material in the project without including it in the finished book.
Create a book, then add sections from its Contents page. Open a section to write its title, synopsis, status, and Markdown body. Reorder sections by moving them within or between manuscript groups. Turning inclusion off moves material out of the assembled output without deleting it.
In the native app, tap New on the Books list, or choose Books from Create, to start a book. It belongs to your account whichever team is selected, and starts as a private draft. Open a book to see its Contents grouped as front matter, chapters, back matter and set aside, then tap a section to read it. From a section's menu you can edit its text, rename it, delete it, move it up or down, or move it to another group or set it aside; a moved section goes to the end of its new group. The book's menu adds a section at the end of the chapters, and publishes the book or returns it to draft. Dragging, imports, synopsis, status and book settings stay on the web Contents page.
The app edits section text as Markdown: **bold**, *italic*,
~~strikethrough~~, [link](https://…), ## heading, - list, > quote,
and * * * for a scene break. A single line break stays a line break. Pictures
and page breaks appear as [[Picture 1]] and [[Page break]] lines: move a
line to move the picture or page break, or delete the line to remove it.
Pictures are added on the web. A section that uses underline, a different font
or text size, or list items with line breaks can be read, renamed and deleted
in the app, but not edited there, so that formatting is never lost.
If the section changed somewhere else while you were editing it, the app shows the latest saved version and lets you keep it or replace it with yours. The first text change in each editing session keeps the previous text as a snapshot.
The editor records snapshots so an earlier version can be inspected or restored. Restoring replaces the current section body, so save or copy anything you need from the current version first. Find and replace can change repeated text across the book; review the matches before applying a broad replacement.
Merging sections combines selected material. Deleting a section is different from setting it aside and should be used only when its history is no longer needed.
Plan limits apply to the number of books, not the number of chapters in an existing book. For a section whose content or order cannot be recovered from history, Contact support.
