Putting a catalogue into a Store one product at a time is the slowest part of opening one. Importing creates the names, descriptions, prices and SKUs together, leaving you the part only you can do: the photographs.

Find it on Products, under Import JSON. Use Copy the prompt in the import box to get this format plus the instructions an assistant needs, then paste in your price list and paste back what it gives you.

Imported products are drafts, and a draft cannot be published without a picture. So an imported price can never reach a customer without somebody opening the product, adding an image and publishing it deliberately. That is the intended safeguard, not an inconvenience to work around.

Importing only creates products. It never edits or removes one you already have, because an existing product may be part of an order that still has to make sense.

The whole document is checked before anything is created, including every price. If any part of it does not fit the format below, nothing is created and the problem is reported with the exact product that caused it.

The document

{
  "products": [
    { "title": "Wool scarf", "description": "Undyed British wool.", "price": "48.00", "sku": "SCF-001" }
  ]
}

products is required, and holds at least one product and up to 100.

Field Type Notes
title string, required 2 to 300 characters.
description string, optional Up to 20,000 characters. Newlines are kept.
price string or number, required Written in whole currency units — 48 or 48.00, not pence or cents. Must be above zero.
sku string, optional Your own stock code, up to 100 characters. Two products in one document cannot share one.

The currency is your Store's, and the document cannot change it. Write prices in that currency, with at most the number of decimal places it uses.

Every imported product is physical, tracks stock, and starts with no stock counted. Digital products are not imported, because the file has to be chosen from your file library.

After importing

Each product needs an image before it can be published, and most will want a stock count. Open each one from Products to finish it:

  • add at least one image;
  • set the stock quantity, or turn stock tracking off;
  • check the price reads correctly in your currency;
  • publish it.
