Every job has its own application form. Applicants do not need a Magpie account. Open a job and find Application questions.

Built-in questions

These are under Application questions on the job's page. Full name and Email address are always required. Phone number, Resume and Cover letter can each be Not asked, Optional or Required. A new job requires a resume (a CV) and asks for a phone number and a cover letter as optional.

Your questions

Questions you add are under Your questions, after the built-in ones. Select Add a question, enter the question, and choose an answer type: short answer, long answer, URL, number, date, yes or no, drop-down menu (pick one), multiple choice (pick one), checkboxes (pick any), or file upload. A drop-down menu, multiple choice or checkboxes question needs its choices, one per line; the Choices box stays off for the other types. Use URL for a portfolio or profile link: applicants can type it without https://, such as example.com/portfolio, and Magpie adds it.

Change a question's wording, its choices or whether it is required in place. Drag a question by its grip, or use its arrows, to reorder your questions. Remove stops asking a question. Answers that applicants already submitted keep the question's wording.

Do not ask for information the team has no reason to collect, such as birth date or health information.

Files

Applicants can upload PDF, Word (.doc and .docx), text, JPEG, PNG and WebP files up to 10 MB each, for the resume and for any file upload question. Magpie reads a file's type from its contents, not its name. Files are stored privately. Only team members who can open Hiring can download them, from the candidate's page. A file is not available at a public address.

After someone applies

The applicant sees a confirmation on the job page. If Confirmation email is on in Hiring → Settings, Magpie also emails them that the application was received. See Hiring settings. The job's hiring manager gets an email about the new application.

Applicants who submit the same form twice, for example by refreshing the page, create one application. Magpie limits how many applications one connection can send in an hour; past the limit, the applicant is told how long to wait. Submissions that fill a hidden field that people do not see are shown the confirmation and are not saved.

When someone applies again with the same email address, Magpie adds an application to the existing candidate. It does not change the candidate's saved name or phone number.
