Bring people from outside the team into a channel

Open a channel to people outside the team

On a paid plan, a team admin can let people who are not in the team into one channel. Open the channel and select its name at the top to open Channel details (in the app, choose Members from the channel's menu), then choose Invite people from outside the team.

The channel becomes members only: everyone now in the team stays a member, and people who join the team later can join it from the channel list. This cannot be undone. General, and channels in Personal, cannot have guests. On the free plan, Channel details says that inviting people from outside the team needs a paid plan.

Add people

From Channel details:

• Add people takes a handle. Someone in the team is added at once. Anyone else is sent an invitation and joins as a guest once they accept it.
• Create invite link makes a link that anyone signed in to Magpie can use to join as a guest; someone without an account can create one from the link. A link works for 7 days and for up to 25 people. The link is shown only when it is made: copy it then. In the app, Share a new invite link opens the share sheet.
• Links and invitations not yet answered are listed there. Revoke a link or Cancel an invitation to stop it working.
• Remove takes someone out of the channel. Their messages stay.

How many guests a team can have depends on its plan, and Billing shows the count as Chat guests; see Plans, limits, and billing. A team that moves to the free plan keeps its guests but cannot add more.

Join as a guest

An invitation by handle waits under Invitations in Chat, and in Messages in the app, with Join and Decline. An invite link opens a page that names the channel, its team and who invited you: sign in or create an account, then choose Join channel.

A guest needs a handle so the other members can tell who they are; someone without one chooses it when they join. A guest can read and post in that channel, attach images and files, react, reply in threads and delete their own messages. They see the channel's member list and nothing else of the team, and they do not join the team. The channels someone is a guest in are listed under Shared with you in Chat, labelled with the team, whichever team they have selected.

Leave or come back

Anyone can leave a members-only channel from Channel details with Leave channel. A guest needs a new invitation to come back; a team member can join it again from the channel list.

An invite link that says it is no longer available has expired, was revoked or has been used by as many people as it allows; ask for a new one. For anything else, Contact support.
