Add mailboxes, aliases and a catch-all
Add mailboxes and aliases at a Mail domain, choose who can open each mailbox, and decide what happens to mail sent to other addresses.
Addresses, under Mail in the sidebar, lists what a verified domain receives at. When Personal or the team has more than one verified domain, choose the domain at the top. Members who can edit the team's records add addresses and choose where aliases deliver; team admins also set the catch-all, and suspend and remove addresses. To add a domain first, see Connect your own domain to Mail.
Add an address
Choose Add address, enter the part before the @, and choose where it delivers under Delivers to:
- A new mailbox for this address makes a mailbox: it has its own Inbox, where its messages are read and sent from.
- An existing mailbox makes an alias: mail sent to the address arrives in that mailbox, which can also send from it.
- Nobody: refuse it instead of the catch-all keeps the address out of the catch-all. It is offered only while Any other address delivers to a mailbox.
Mail delivers only to mailboxes in Magpie. An address cannot forward mail to an address elsewhere, such as a Gmail address.
Each mailbox has 5 GB of storage, and its row shows how much it uses.
Who can open a mailbox
In a team, a new mailbox opens for every member. Each mailbox on Addresses shows who can open it: Everyone in the team, which suits a shared address such as help@, or Only one member, for whom it is private. A private mailbox opens only for that member, team admins included. Admins see its address and storage, not its messages. The choice saves when it is made.
- A team admin can make a shared mailbox private to one member.
- Only the member a mailbox is private to can share it again or give it to another member. An admin cannot open it up.
- If that member leaves the team, the mailbox shows Private to a former member, and a team admin can give it to another member or share it.
Mail sent to a private mailbox, its aliases and the catch-all still arrives there. In Personal, every mailbox is yours.
Aliases
Addresses lists each mailbox with the number of aliases that deliver to it. Choose that number to see them, then Edit on an alias to choose the mailboxes it delivers to: one, or several, so that one address reaches more than one person. An alias that delivers to several mailboxes is counted under each.
Refused addresses lists the addresses set to refuse mail. Aliases with no mailbox lists aliases whose mailboxes were all removed; mail sent to them is refused until they deliver to a mailbox again.
Add common addresses
Add common addresses adds role addresses such as postmaster@, abuse@, webmaster@, info@ and support@ as aliases in one step. postmaster@ and abuse@ start ticked because mail servers expect them at every domain; Select all ticks every address listed, and you can then clear any you do not want. Choose the mailboxes they deliver to, then Add addresses. Addresses already in use are not listed. While the domain has neither a catch-all nor postmaster@ and abuse@, Addresses also offers those two with Add them.
Any other address (catch-all)
Any other address (catch-all), the last row on Addresses, sets what happens to mail sent to an address that is not listed. A team admin chooses a mailbox to deliver it to, or Refuse it. The choice saves when it is made. A listed address always takes precedence, so a catch-all does not change where another listed address delivers. A catch-all also receives spam sent to made-up addresses.
Suspend or remove an address
Team admins suspend, enable or remove a mailbox from its More menu, and an alias or refused address from Edit. A suspended mailbox keeps its messages, but it does not receive or send mail. Mail sent to a suspended mailbox or address is refused, even while Any other address delivers to a mailbox.
After an address is removed, mail sent to it goes to the catch-all, or is refused when there is none. A mailbox can be removed only when it holds no messages, including those in Trash and Spam; suspend it instead to keep its mail. Removing the mailbox the catch-all delivers to sets the catch-all to refuse mail.
