A project groups related issues in Personal or a team. Projects are optional: an issue can have no project.

Create a project

Open Projects from the Issues section of the sidebar and choose Create project. Enter the project name, an issue prefix of letters and numbers that starts with a letter, the team, and an optional overview in Markdown. The prefix must be different from the other projects' prefixes in that team.

Issues created in the project are numbered with its prefix, for example WEB-14. The prefix cannot be changed after the project is created, and an issue keeps its identifier when it moves to another project.

You can also create a project from New issue with Create a project; see Create and track issues.

Add issues to a project

Choose Create issue on the project's page to create an issue in it, or choose the project on New issue. To move existing issues into a project, select them on the Issues list and choose Project in the bar above the list (see Issue list, board and saved views). Moving an issue to another project clears its milestone.

The project page

The Projects page lists each project with its prefix, how many of its issues are completed, and its status. A project's page shows its overview, GitHub repository, lead and dates, then its milestones and its issues. While the page is open, new issues, status changes and completion counts appear without reloading it.

Choose Edit project to change the name, overview, status, lead, start date, target date and GitHub repository, then Save project. The statuses are Planned, In Progress, Paused, Completed and Cancelled; a new project is Planned. The lead is a team member who can use Issues. The target date cannot be before the start date.

A project counts an issue as completed when its status is in the Completed category (see Issue statuses, custom fields and automations).

On Edit project, enter the repository's address, such as https://github.com/owner/repository, in GitHub repository. Issues in the project can then list the repository's pull requests and commits (see Create and track issues). Clear the field to remove the repository.

Milestones

A milestone is a named target inside one project. On a project's page, choose View milestones, then Create milestone. A milestone has a name, a Markdown description, an optional target date and a status: Planned, Active, Completed or Cancelled. Choose a milestone on the Milestones page to edit it.

To put an issue in a milestone, open the issue, choose More, then Edit labels, milestone and other fields, choose the milestone and choose Save milestone. Only issues in the milestone's project can be added. The issue page, the project page and the Milestones page show how many of a milestone's issues are completed.

A milestone can be removed with Remove only when no issues are in it. Move its issues to another milestone, or set their milestone to None, first.

Roadmap

Roadmap lists the projects that have a start date or a target date, earliest first, with their status and how many of their issues are complete. A project with neither date is not on the Roadmap; add a date on Edit project to show it.

Share a project with a client

A project can be shown to a client in a Client Portal. The client sees its name, status and target date, not its issues or comments. See Share meetings, projects and signature requests in a Client Portal.
