Your talk page is a public address, such as magpie.diy/talk/yourname, where anyone can record a Walkie Talkie message for you, or write one, without an account first. Put it on your website or in your social media profiles. What people send arrives in Walkie Talkie under Requests.

Turn it on

Open Walkie Talkie settings and turn on Talk page under Your talk page. Its address uses your handle: if you have not chosen one, choose Choose a handle first. Turned off, the address says you are not taking messages.

When it is on, the rows under it are:

  • Address: copy your talk page's address, or open it.
  • Greeting: the line under your name on the page and in its pictures. It starts as "Leave me a Walkie Talkie message." Clear it to go back to that.
  • Email me about messages: an email when someone sends you a message, one per person, and no more from them until you open their conversation.
  • Share your talk page: pictures for an Instagram story and for link previews.

Your talk page is yours, not a team's. The conversations it starts are direct conversations with you, listed whichever team is selected. People who use it do not join your team.

Share it

Paste the address anywhere. X, Bluesky, Facebook, LinkedIn and messaging apps show a picture of your talk page under it, with your name, photo and greeting; the picture changes when you change any of them.

To put it in an Instagram story, open Share your talk page on your phone and choose Share to Instagram. Magpie copies the address and opens your phone's share sheet with the story picture. Choose Instagram, then Story, and add a Link sticker with the address. On a computer, the page shows a code that opens it on your phone, and Download picture.

What visitors do

Visitors see your photo, name and greeting, the Talk button and a box to write in. They hold Hold to talk and speak, for up to 2 minutes, or write a message. Nobody hears it until they send it.

To send it, they choose Continue with Apple or Continue with Google, or give their name and email address for a link that sends it. The page says that sending makes them a free Magpie account, so they can hear your reply. The link works on any device for 14 days: opening it and choosing Send my message sends the message, makes their account or logs in to the one they have, and opens their conversation with you. The page where they recorded it changes to Sent by itself, without logging in that browser.

Someone already logged in to Magpie sends straight away and goes to their conversation with you. You see the name they gave, not their email address.

Requests

A conversation started from your talk page is a request until you reply. Requests are listed above your conversations, with Play for the newest recording and Ignore.

  • Reply, by voice or in writing, to accept it. It becomes an ordinary direct conversation, and the sender becomes a guest of your Personal with that conversation and nothing else; they are listed on Personal's guests page (Guests on a team). When Personal already has as many guests as your plan allows, the reply is refused with a link to your plan, and the request keeps waiting. Remove on Personal's guests page makes the conversation read-only for both of you.
  • Ignore takes it out of the list without telling them. Ignored requests are behind Show ignored.
  • Block, above the Talk button in the conversation, stops them sending you messages or starting a conversation with you. To undo it, choose Unblock under Blocked people in Account settings.

Until you reply, they can send 3 messages of up to 2 minutes each, and cannot talk live. Magpie emails them once when you reply, and not again until they open the conversation.

When something goes wrong

  • A recording cut short by a closed page or a dropped connection is kept. Opened again in the same browser, the page offers it with Play it back, Delete and Send.
  • A link that no longer works was used already, its message was deleted, or it is more than 14 days old. Record the message again.
  • If the email does not arrive, check the junk folder, then choose Send the email again or Use a different email.

If something else goes wrong, Contact support.
